Building a New Nation Post American War of Independence

How did most Americans feel about having one strong government over them? Sad, unhappy, unexcited, wanting the opposite because they had been used to their colony's government and left their countries to escape that control.
What plan of government did the states first form after the War of Independence? A bad unstrong government that was not allowed to tax people called the Articles of Confederation.
Was the government under the Articles of Confederation weak or strong? The BIG el-weako!
What important power did the government lack? Taxing people
At what meeting was the decision made to create a brand new government? the Constitutional Convention
In what building was the Constitutional Convention held? Independence Hall, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania
Who was the president of the Convention? George Washington
Who did the most important work at the Convention? James Madison
What new plan of government was formed during the Constitutional Convention? The Constitution and the 3 Branches of Government (Executive, Legislative, Judiciary)
Who has the power to see that our nation's laws are obeyed? The President/Executive Branch
Who has the power to make our country's most important laws? Congress(Senate & House of Representatives)/ Legislative Branch
Name the two houses that make up Congress. the Senate(2 senators per state) and House of Representatives (number of representatives per state depends on population size of state)
Which house gives equal representation to all states, no matter what size? the Senate
In which house do the larger states have more power? the House of Representatives
What is the highest court in the land? the Supreme Court
Who has the power to judge if the laws made fit under the Constitution? The Supreme Court/Judiciary Branch
What did each state give up when it signed the Constitution? The right to completely govern itself
What was added to the Constitution to insure that certain rights and freedoms could never be taken away from the people? the Bill of Rights
What is a republic? A government run by representatives of the people.
Who was our first President and Vice President? George Washington & John Adams
Where was our country's capital when George Washington was president? New York City, New York
What do we call the day the new President take the oath of office? Inauguration Day
How many terms did Washington serve? Two terms
Who was our second President? John Adams
Near what river was the country's new capital built? Which states gave land for the city? 1)the Potomac River 2)Maryland and Virginia donated land for Washington, D.C.
What was the name of the new capital? What was the land that the city was built on called? 1)Washington 2)D.C. (District of Columbia)
