Principles of government
| term | definition |

| nation | sizable group of people who share bonds of race, language, custom, and sometimes religion |
| state | political community which occupies a definite territory and has a sovereign government |
| nation-state | country in which the territory of both the nation and the state are the same |
| consensus | agreement about basic beliefs |
| territory | land with defined boundaries |
| sovereignty | supreme and absolute authority within a territory |
| government | institution of the state which maintains social order, provides public services, and enforces decisions on its people |
| social contract | theory that people give power to the state to maintain the social order, and the state agrees to protect its citizens |
| Evolutionary Theory | The heads of families served as the earliest government |
| Force Theory | Government ermerged when all people in an area were forced to except the authority of one person or group |
| Divine Right Theory | Belief that God or gods choose rulers |
