Zimmerman Note of 1917 Secretly proposed a German-Mexican alliance that promised Mexico Texas, New Mexico, and Arizona should they win the war.
Carrie Chapman Catt Raised women's support for the war effort.
*Espionage Act of 1917 Gave postal officials the ability to ban certain newspapers and magazine. Draft obstructers were fined.
*Sedition Act of 1918 Made it a federal offense to speak against America and its war efforts.
Eugene V. Debs Socialist leader sentenced to 10 years in prison. He ran for president from jail and actually won many votes.
Emma Goldman Anarchist arrested for denouncing the draft.
1917 With the Bolshevik Revolution, Russia withdraws from the war.
Treaty of Versailles (1919) Created four new countries. Made Germany limit their military, pay war reparations, and claim responsibility for the war. This laid the groundwork for WWII.
Schlenck v. United States (1919) Supreme Court case that affirmed the legality of the government limiting the freedom of speech during times of war. Claimed that disrupters posed a threat to United States security.
Council of National Defense Studied problems of economic mobilization. Had a focus on shipbuilding.
Steel Strike of 1919 Strikers wanted recognition of their union and rights. When the strike was broken, it crippled the labor movement.
Sheppard-Towner Maternity Act of 1921 Provided federally financed instruction in maternal and infant health care. Supported women's traditional role as mothers.
Overman Act (1918) Gave President Wilson the right to control the actions of government organization to help with the war.
International Workers of the World Labor union that was against war.
American Federation of Labor Lead by Samuel Gompers. His support of the war won the Federation many members.
Doughboy An American fighter in Europe.
Frohwerk v. United States (1919) Newspaper publisher Jacob Frohwerk printed articles opposing America's entrance into WWI. He was tried and convicted for violating the Espionage Act.
