The Great Depression

What was the first thing FDR did as President? He closed all of the banks. "Bank Holidays". Only healthy banks were allowed to re-open. He felt that the people had to regain confidence in the banks.
What was the CCC? Civilian Conservation Corps- employed 2 million young men. They planted trees and improved the environment. *remember CONSERVATION- likes forests*
How did Roosevelt feel about economic matters? He thought the government should intervene and regulate where necessary.
How did FDR feel about regulating social issues (and behavior)? He was liberal on this matter.
Who was the commanding officer who attacked the Bonus Marchers in Washington DC? Douglas MacArthur
What were the causes of the great depression? 1- Stock market crashed 2- The Federal Reserve set interest rates too high 3- the government was unable to solve economic problems 4- inequality in the distribution of wealth
What was the AAA? Agricultural Adjustment Act. It paid farmers not to grow crops because they had previously overproduced. Limiting crops would make the prices of food go back up.
What did the SEC do? Securities and Exchange Commission- regulated the stock market and fought against inside trading.
Who was Huey Long? FDR critic who was known as the "kingfish". He was the senator from Louisiana who wanted to "Share the wealth" (socialist).
Who was Francis Townshend? FDR critic who wanted more security for the elderly. He was silenced with the passing of Social Security.
Who was Father Charles Coughlin FDR critic who was popular on the radio. He didn't think the New Deal did ENOUGH to help people. he was known as the "Radio Priest"
What were some of the programs in the 1st New Deal (1935-1937) Public Works Administration, Civilian Conservation Crops, Tennessee Valley Authority, National Industrial Recovery Act, National Recovery Administration
What did the National Labor Relations Act do? It said that every worker had the right to join a union
What FDR idea was highly criticized? The Supreme Court Packing Plan. People thought it gave the government too much power.
What happened on October 29, 1929? The Stock Market Crashed on Black Tuesday

What did the repatriation policy cause Mexicans to do? It drove hundreds of thousands of Mexican immigrants out of the US
What did the Hawley-Smoot Tariff Act do? Raised US tariff rates; Europeans raised their imports taxes as well. Caused a slow down in international trade. (bad for US economy).
What does it mean to "buy on a margin"? stocks could be purchased by paying a percent of the price and borrowing the rest.
What does it mean that there was an inequality in the distribution of wealth? The wealthiest Americans were only a small percentage of the population, yet they were the only ones getting richer. The poor were the majority, but they were not sharing in the wealth.
What was the Bonus Army? They wanted their WW1 bonus early because of the Depression. They marched on Washington DC and set up tents.
What is the effect of raising interest rates? When interest rates are high- people save more (in the bank). When the interest rates are low- people pull their money out of the banks and spend it. Therefore, the GD was hurt by high interest rates because people STOPPED SPENDING
What did the Indian Reorganization Act do? Restored tribal ownership of land and provided federal economic-development funds.
what president sent in Douglas MacArthur to break up the Bonus Army? President Herbert Hoover. (Remember- this made him even MORE unpopular- hoovervilles + bonus army = FDR elected).
How did FDR frequently address the American people and what were these talks called? Radio. Fireside Chats.
What were programs of the SECOND new deal? Works Progress Administration, Wealth Tax Act, Social Security Act, National Labor Relations Act
Who is the famous British economist who influenced the second New Deal? John Maynard Keynes
What did the 20th Amendment do? it shortened the period between presidential election and inauguration.
