| Define Black Codes and give examples. | Black Codes laws that restricted the rights of freed slaves. These codes were discriminatory & restricted type of employment, kept blacks from testifying against whites, & from voting, allowed whipping as a punishment & No job could go to prison. |
| In 1866, what was Congress's response to the black codes? | The Civil Rights Act which extended citizenship to blacks and gave the federal government the right to intervene any time civil rights were taken away from an individual. The 14th amendment granted citizenship to all men. |

| What steps did Georgia take to be readmitted to the union in 1870? | Ratify that blacks could vote and hold public office. Black officials that were removed from office were reseated. Approved the 14th amendment and ratified the 15th amendment. |
| what is a share cropper? | A person that offers their labor for the use of land, home, seed and farm equipment. In return the land owner gets part of the profit from harvest. |
| What is a tenant farmer? | Similar to share cropper but has some farm equipment and seed. Generally will agree upon a set upon amount that the land owner would receive for use of the land. |
| Why were sharecroppers and tenant farmers needed following the civil war? | Because the planters and farmers needed people to work on their farms. There were so many former slaves as well as landless whites who needed jobs/land. |
| How did cotton play an important role in Georgia's economic development after the Civil war? | It brought industries to some parts of Georgia. Northern investors put money into building textile mills. |
