RESNA ATP Exam study guide terms: Impairment – Prototype

QuestionAnswer
Handicap refers to the results when an individual with an impairment or disability is unable to fulfill his or her normal role in society
Disability refers to the results that occur when an impairment leads to an inability to perform an activity in the manner which is deemed to be normal function for a human being
Impairment the loss or abnormality of psychological, physical, or anatomical structure of function within a person
Activity the definition as prescribed by the World Health Organization in substituting the term activity for the term disability
Participation in relating the term of handicap in accordance with the individual's level of participation
Assistive Technology the broad range of devices, services, strategies and practices that are conceived and applied to help the problems faced by the disabled population
Assistive Technology Device the device that can be described as any item, piece of equipment, or product system that is used to increase, maintain, or improve functional capabilities of the individuals with disabilities
Assistive Technology Service a service or organization that is directly involved in providing assistance to an individual with a disability in the selection, acquisition or use of an assistive technology device
Reasonable Acommodation employers and higher education institutes that receive federal funding must seek to accommodate the needs of employees and students with disabilities.
Least Restrictive Environment The degree of modification that is acceptable in a job or academic program. It also refers to the degree of restriction that accompanies the placement of an individual with a disability in a setting.
Prototype the initial, new device that is produced from a design to be used by the consumers. Normally the consumer is involved in the design process and trial testing of the prototype or new device.
