what were the US troops fighting in Europe called? American Expeditionary Force (AEF)
At the time the US troops were training, how was the war in Europe going? What did the Allied Powers want? The Allied Powers were losing to Germans Britain and France desperately want AEF to join them
Who was Gen John Pershing? What were his opinions? leader of Us troops, wanted Americans to fight in separate unit promoted disciplined training
What are Communists? people who want equal distribution of wealth and all public property
How did Russian Revolution affect war? Communists overthrew Russian gov, too much chaos so Russia pulls out of war
What did the Germans think of Russia's leaving the war? What did they do? opportunity for Germany to win, advanced and attacked France
Americans soldiers arrived in europe. what were conditions like? have bad food + unsanitary conditions in trenches
What happened at the Second Battle of the Marne? Germans attack France but Allies + AEF drive them back Major Turning point in war
How were the Allies able to drive Germans back in France? Because they had American support and fresh energy
How did Allied Powers succeed at sea battles? Allied powers win at sea using convoy system strategy to protect their ships from U-boats
Who was Alvin York? American war hero who killed many Germans, won medals
Who were the Harlem Hellfighters? African Americans infantry who were very brave, constantly fighting
What is an armistice? agreement to stop fighting for a while
Why did the Germans want to pull out of the war? Germans tired + starving + running out of troops
What did Germans do after their leader fled? What were they required to do? Germans agree to ceasefire, had to surrender conquered land + weapons
