What is a missionary? A person who tries to convert others to a different religion.
What is a mission? A building and surrounding area where missionaries taught American Indians.
What does independence mean? freedom from another country
What is a presidio? a fort
What is a revolution? A war where people try to overthrow the government and replace it with another one.
What was the Pima Rebellion? When the Pima raided the Tmuacacori Mission and killed several Spanish settlers.
What did the government in Spain do to protect the settlers in present day Arizona? built presidios
Why was the Tucson presidio important? The Tucson presidio could protect the road that led to California.
Name 3 things that Father Kino did to help the Indians - taught them Spanish - taught them Christianity - introduced them to new crops - taught them how to raise livestock - started over 22 missions
Name 4 things the Missions did for the Indians? - taught them Spanish - taught them Christianity - introduced them to new crops - taught them how to raise livestock - taught them how to work with leather and iron - taught them to use and ride horses and mules
How did the Hopi Indians react to the Spanish help? - some reacted favorably and learned - some became angry
What was the Golden Age of Spanish Rule? A period when the Spanish culture thrived in Arizona.
What 2 things did the Spanish learn form the Indians? - learned how to live in the desert - learned the land in Arizona
