What is imperialism? the building of empires by taking over either politicallyl or economically- foreign lands
Who was Alfred Thayer Mahan He wrote "Influence of Sea Power upon History"- which said it twas the US destiny to become a world power- through its navy
What was the Great White Fleet? TR's 16 battleships that he toured around to world to show off the US navy
Why did the US want to be imperialistic? 1- cultural ("civilize" the "savage" people) 2- Economic (markets for new goods) 3- Poltical (Our destiny to be in power) 4- social (provide an outlet for the people we wanted to get rid of)
What 4 groups were in favor of imperialism? 1- missionaries 2-politicians 3- naval strategists 4- the press
who was opposed to imperialism? Anti-Imperliat League (those who thought imperialism went against liberty, self-government and the idea that all men were equal)
What did the Treaty of Paris (Sp-Am War) provide? Cuba became independent, Guam, Puerto Rico and Phillippines (for $20 mill) came under control of US
Who had "Big Stick" Diplomacy? Teddy Roosevelt

What is jingoism? extreme patriotism for your country
WHy did the US care about what happened to Cuba in the SP-Am war? US investements (sugar cane/tobacco)
What is "Yellow" Journalism? sensationalizing (blowing out of proportion) headlines to sell more papers
What caused the US to declare war on Spain in the Spanish-American War? Explosion of the USS MAINE in the Havannah Harbour
What was the Teller Amendment? It said that the US had no intetion of taking political control of Cuba

What caused the msot deaths in the SP-AM war? Disease (heat-exhaustion and yellow fever)
What was the goal of US foreign policy after 1900? Aggressive! We wanted to expand the American Influence and be IMPERIALISTIC
How long did the Spanish-American War last? Less than 4 months in 1898. Very short.
What is a missionary? a Christian trying to convert other people to Christianity. Their goal was the "civilize" their "little brown brothers"

What is Dollar Diplomacy? Wilson's idea that foreign policy of promotin stablility abroad by supporting trade
What was the Platt AmendmenT? Used to control Cuba. Cuba had to permit US to intervene in its political affairs.
Even though Cuba was "independent" after the Spanish-American war, it still relied heavily on what country? the United States
How did Roosevelt secure the construction of the Panama Canal? He helped the Panamanians overthrow the Columbians
What was the Russo-Japan conflict? Treaty signed between Russia and Japan under the supervision of Teddy Roosevelt, for which he won a Nobel Peace Prize.

What is the Monroe Doctrine? stated that further efforts by European nations to colonize land or interfere with states in North or South America would be viewed as acts of aggression requiring U.S. intervention
What is the Roosevelt Corollary to the Monroe Doctrine? Addition that says that only US would intervene in Latin American affairs- no Europeans.
How did the US finance most of WWI ? Through the sale of War Bonds
What did the Food Administration do? Encouraged people to not waste any food during WWI. Food was a weapon.
What did the Committee on Public Information do? Created pamphlets, posters, ads and tried to raise PATRIOTISM (form of propaganda).
What did the Zimmerman Note say? Mexico and Germany would work together. Germany would help Mexico get territories back.

Who was Marcus Garvey Black Civil Rights leader who wanted to lead a "Back to Africa" movement

What is the OPen Door Policy? Proposed under McKinley's administration that all nations would have EQUAL trading rights in China and "respect" its territory
What is conscription? The DRAFT
Who led the American Army? John Pershing
Did the US ever sign the League of Nations Nope.
