What tribe refused to leave Georgia? the Cherokee
What did the Cherokee do to avoid having to move? They sued the state of Georgia. The case made it to the Supreme Court
What did the Supreme Court rule? that only the federal government had the right to make decisions about native tribes, not states
Did President Jackson support the Supreme Court decision? No. He ordered the Cherokee moved anyway.
How many Cherokee people were relocated in 1838? 17,000 men, women, and children
How far did they travel? over 1000 miles
Where did the Cherokee move to, and how did they get there? They were relocated from Georgia to Oklahoma, and they mostly walked.
