Who was the third president of the U.S.? Thomas Jefferson
Who was Thomas Jefferson's rival in his campaign for president? Aaron Burr
What did Jefferson call his own election? The "Revolution of 1800"
What did Jefferson believe in? Laissez faire- The idea that the government shouldn't interfere in the economy.
What problem did Thomas Jefferson have with the Louisiana Purchase? It could have been unconstitutional.
Who did Thomas Jefferson send to explore the West? Meriwether Lewis and William Clark.
What were the goals of Lewis and Clark? Report back on the geography, plants, animals, and other natural features. They also wanted to make contact with the Native Americans and also to find a passage from the Atlantic to the Pacific.
How many years were Lewis and Clark gone? About 2 years.
When did Lewis and Clark reach North Dakota? October of 1804.
What is the continental divide the Lewis and Clark discovered? The Rocky Mountains.
What happened to Zebulon Pike on his expedition? He failed to cross the Rockies, and then was arrested by the Spanish. They escorted him back to the U.S. after several months.
Which countries were the Barbary States? Morocco, Algiers, Tunisia, and Tripoli.
How did Thomas Jefferson respond to impressment of sailors? With an embargo.
How did Jefferson's embargo effect the world? It actually harmed the U.S. the most, causing American exports to fall 85 million dollars!
How did Americans respond to the embargo? Badly. They were outraged and began to smuggle goods.
Who were the war hawks? The war hawks were people who were eager for war with Britain. They were led by Clay and Calhoun.
What happened to the ports of America at the beginning of the War of 1812? They got blockaded, and by the end of the war, 135 ships were blocking U.S. ports.
What happened in July of 1812? General William Hull invaded Canada.
What ended the War of 1812? The Treaty of Ghent.
