Hoover unpopular. BEF? "bonus army" disaster didn't help! (BEF) Thousands of veterans staged a march and camped out until they go their money Very distracting for Hoover... Symbolized that the president was insensitive to the struggle that ppl were going through.
Who is sent to control the BEF? General Douglas McArthur is sent it to control this. He is BRUTAL! "hooverviles" were sent on fire; people died; etc.
election of 1932. who won? platform? Franklin Delano Roosevelt; Democrat; "FDR" "New Deal" LANDSLIDE win!
FDR's New deal - The first 100 days? Unprecedented cooperation btw congress and the white house AND the speed at which it passed and signed bills Considered these days as the honeymoon with congress, after that they don't let as many things slide
first 100 days. congress and senate contorlled by? What was part of FDR's platform? 15 bills? democrats; The big BANKING crisis was part of his platform; the ppl just wanted someone to fix it! 15 major bills passed in these days! Good thing, doesn't really help by going slow. Bc they have a banking disaster and they needed to fix it

Banking emergency of 1933 When they reopen, The ppl's money is now insured in the banks. So now they can recover all the money they invest Govt. Backed the banks, ppl re-deposited a LOT of their money again. Restores confidence in banks
Temp solution to the banking eemergency? Temporary solution, eventually became the FDIC: Federal Deposit Insurance Corp. Govt. had regulations on how to operate their businesses now.

The ABC's of the new deal? most expensive? Massive expansion of govt. power. A LOT of new agencies created . the initials are for the govt. agencies CCC, PWA, WPA all put ppl to work ----- KNOW WHAT THEY ARE! WPA most expensive
AAA? SHAECROPPERS? Reduced agricultural surpluses farmers paid to destroy crops wanted the prices to rise! stupid bc ppl are already broke... All the farmer's workers lose their jobs (sharecropping) - live and work on the land
AAA. negative side? Huge Neg Side: The majority of the sharecropping/black population don't have any jobs --- get relief from CCC, PWA, WPA More white sharecroppers hurt, but effects blacks a whole lot more! Mostly Black Americans were effected greatly! 35% of black get a
New deal transformation in america? politically. Political effect: New Deal cause transformation in America, bc the vast majority of black americans vote republican. 1936 reelection of FDR; 76% of black voters vote for him. 1st time 2008 - 95% of black voters voted democratic
National Industrial Recovery Act (NIRA) and the National Recovery Administration (NRA) NIRA attempt by govt. to take over manufacturing part of economy 80% of all industries NRA enforces the rules of the NIRA; tried to contol economy;
How did the NIRA and NRA tried to kill competition? blue eagle? why did FDR hate supreme court? bysetting price controls and attempt to unionize workers BE = To let ppl know you were on board with the NRA If to BE, ppl would boycott the business. All ruled unconstitutional! FDR hates the supreme court, bc its ruling this stuff unconstitutional.

"court packing plan" year? what? how man? Plan to pack the court with his own judges! 70 years old. or older they have to retire or he gets to appoint another judge with him six justices were 70 or older; america says no and law doesnt pass
FDR loses the battle, but wins the war. what? saying? FDR's bill doesn't pass! "A Switch in Time Saves Nine!" He scared the the supreme court so bad that one judge started voting his way.

End of 1930's and ND? election of 1940? FDR's popularity down by Election of 1940 Saved by foreign affairs issues Sick with FDR and just make it out of the chaos instead of a new president to get mixed up in the world's chaos. Lost states, but still got elected.
