Plymouth Colony

Who were the Separatists? English who wanted to separate from the Church of England
Before coming to America, where did the Separatists go first? Holland
Why did the English leave Holland if they had religious freedom? They didn't want their children learning Dutch ways.
What term is used for a person who makes a journey for religious reasons? Pilgrim
In exchange for paying for the colonists' voyage, what would the colonists need to do when they got to America? Send the company fish, furs, and lumber
What was the name of the ship that brought the colonists to America? Mayflower
Were all the passengers on the Mayflower Pilgrims? If not, who else was on the ship? No, some of the passengers were servants and workers hired to build a colony.
What did the men aboard the Mayflower sign that agreed to 'just and equal laws'? The Mayflower Compact
What is a compact? An agreement
What does self-rule mean? Govern oneself
What is majority rule? Majority rule is when more than half of the people have to agree for a decision to be made.
What was the first winter like for the colonists? It was cold and there was little food. Many became ill and about half of them died
What Native American stayed with the colonists and taught them how to fish and farm? Tisquantum (Squanto)
What changed the relationship between the colonists and the Wampanoags? More settlers came and were not friendly to the Indians and settled on more of their land
How did the way the colonists divided the harvest change from the first time the colonists arrived in America and about three years later? At first the harvest was divided equally. Then each person was given their own land, but they also had a common area.
Why did the colonists who arrived in later years do better than the first colonists? The earlier colonists had done well so when later ones arried their were goods for them to trade and buy.
