What were the differences between the British and Continental army? The British were the best trained military in the world at the time. They followed strict rules and were VERY organized. The Continental army was untrained, were not as organized and did not follow the same war "rules" as the British.
What was the importance of Valley Forge? The Continental Army was very short on supplies and they were exhausted. Valley Forge was one of the biggest hardships or challenges that the Continental Army faced in the Revolution. They stayed for Love of Country and Washington.
Who were the Hessians? Why were they important? The Hessians were professional soldiers from Germany who helped the British. They were strong and fierce. They fought at Saratoga.
What was the Treaty of Paris of 1783? Who was it between? The Treaty of Paris was an agreement that ended the Revolutionary War. It was between the newly formed United States and Britain.
Who was Charles Lee? He was a rival of Washington's who was on the Continental Army's side.
What were the four advantages that helped the Colonists to win the Revolution? 1) Better leadership 2) Foreign aid 3) knowledge of the land and 4) Motivation
Why was the battle of Saratoga so important? It was a turning point in the war--the Continental Army won and showed Europe they had a chance.
What was republicanism? An idea that stated that instead of a king, the citizens would rule.
Who was Baron von Steuben? Why was he important? He came from Russia to train the Continental Army to whip the army into shape.
What was the difference between a rifle and a musket? Who had which? A musket is a hunting gun--the Continental Army had muskets. The British had rifles which were faster and stronger.
What was "The Crisis?" Saratoga--lack of supplies, long winter, illness
What is Free Enterprise? Freedom to sell what you want at your own price--opposite of mercantilism; what the Colonies wanted.
What was life like for the Continental Army? Very difficult--not enough supplies
Who was Daniel Boone? He was a wilderness man who helped to build Wilderness Road into Kentucky.
Who was Marquis de Lafayette? French General who led in the Continental Army.
Who was John Paul Jones? Famous naval officer in the Continental Army; scored many victories against the British.
Who was Deborah Samson? She pretended to be a man so she could fight in the Continental Army.
Who was Daniel Morgan? He was a captain in the American Revolution from Virginia.
Who was Benedict Arnold? Soldier in the Continental Army who was wounded by was brave--intimidated the British army at Saratoga.
Who was Horatio Gates? General for the Continental Army who led them in the Battle of Saratoga.
Who was Burgoyne? General of the British army.
What was the importance of Bennington? The Battle of Bennington took place when Burgoyne sent a raiding party to VT to get supplies. The New England troops met the raiding party and there was a battle. The Continental Army won.
Who was General Howe? General for the British at the Battle of Bunker Hill.
Why did the Americans with at Saratoga? Because they had built forts, the British were exhausted and the Continental army attacked them relentlessly.
Who were the key people at the Battle of Yorktown? General Corwallis, Washing and Rochambeau
Was the Articles of Confederation effective? Explain No--the central goverment was too weak. Colonies had too much power.
Who was John Hanson? He the first "real" president of the U.S. He was a writer and farmer. He ruled for 1 year because his role was not well designed.
What was the Land Ordinance of 1785? Call for people to move out west to make townships. This last was called the Northwest Territory.
What was the importance of Lexington and Concord? The Continental Army won Lexington and lost Concord. These were the first battles of the war.
What was the importance of Fort Ticonderoga? Burgoyne captured Fort Ticonderoga and then celebrated, while he celebrated the Americans cut down trees to block his progress.
What is the importance of Saratoga? Turning point in the war because it caused the European nations to think that the Continental Army might win their independence.
Technically, what number president was Washington? 8th
What was the importance of the Battle of Trenton? The Battle of Trenton was early in the war and a win for the Continental Army--this raised their spirits. Washington's troops also captured many Hessions and supplies.
What was the importance of the Battle of Yorktown? Another important win for the Continental Army in 1781. General Cornwallis surrendered with 8,000 troops. This was the last battle of the Revolution.
