Mercantilism An economic theory that arose in the 16th century. It centers around monopolies, maximizing use of domestic resources, and accumulation of gold and silver.
What was the first permanent English colony in America? In 1607, the English found Jamestown, Virginia, their first successful colonial settlement in America. Founded by Captain John Smith.
Separatists/Pilgrims Came from Holland, where they had fled to after they left England. They feared the "Dutchification" of their children and wanted a place where they were free to practice their own religion.
Joint Stock Company (Virginia Company) Formed in 1606 to establish colonies all along the Atlantic coast of America.
Headright System The headright system gave the head of the household the right to fifty acres of land for himself and another fifty acres for each adult member or servant that he brought to America.
The First Great Awakening A religious revival whose appearance in North America is accredited to Jonathan Edwards. The Great Awakening expressed ideas that opposed Calvinism, predestination, and the importance of complete dependence on God. Values good works.
The Albany Congress A meeting of representatives from 7 of the the 13 British colonies in Albany, New York. The main topic of discussion was the formation of a formal union, laid down by Benjamin Franklin's Albany Plan. (Rejected but a basis for the AoC and Constitution.)
The French and Indian War (____ Years War) Between _____ and _____. Seven;France;GB. Began as a dispute over the areas of present day Pittsburg but evolved into a fight over control of North America.
Treaty of Paris (___) 1763. Ended the French and Indian War. Signed by GB, France, Spain, and Portugal . Granted GB control of Florida, Louisiana, the Mississippi River, and the Appalachian Mountains.
The Sugar Act (___) 1764.Passed by Parliament as a revenue-raising act. After this act, the British began imposing more upon the colonists to over the debt caused by the FI War. This was greatly opposed by colonists,who were also in economic depression.(Sam Adams,James Otis)
