What was the 13th amendment? Passed in 1865. Bans slavery in US
What was the 14th amendment? Passed in 1868. All people born in US or naturalized are US citizens.
What was the 15h amendment? Passed in 1870. Cannot deny a citizen’s rights based on race.
What did the Reconstruction Act of 1867 entail? South divided into 5 military district, led by a Union general, create a new constitution, all adult males vote, must recognize the 14th amendment
Why was Johnson impeached? Congress passed Tenure of Office Act so that Johnson couldn’t remove Radical Republican Sec of War Edwin Stanton. Johnson fired Stanton. Impeached.
Why did the KKK begin during Reconstruction? What did they do? Southern Democrats mad at blacks, Republicans, and Union. Most Southern gov’ts Republican, blacks getting equal right and voted into Southern gov’t. KKK est in 1886. Terrorize blacks, carpetbaggers, Republicans
What was the Gettysburg address? Why is that document so important even today? 1863 Lincoln dedicates Gettysburg battlefield as cemetery. Underscores equality of all humanity, war is a struggle for freedom, guarantees democracy, unified nation
What was the Emancipation Proclamation? Why was it important? Lincoln frees all slaves in CSA, but not the North. Helps destroy CSA, makes war about slavery (not states rights), freedmen now fight against CSA.
Describe how Reconstruction ended. Controversy over 1876 prez election. South gives election to Republican Hayes. Southerner appointed post master general, $$$ for internal improvements in South, no federal troops in South
