Hepburn Act. Year? who? what for? - Hepburn Act (1906): Railroad rates, ICC They were charging crazy rates! creates fair railroad cost. sets the rates. used ICC (interstate commerce commission) to enforce it
The Jungle. Year? about what? 2 other acts? - The Jungle (1906) (book) Meat packing industry bc of this we have regulations on food Bc the jungle was so bad!!!! Pure food and drug act (1906) Meat Inspection Act (1906)
Labor. Strikes? years? what went down? strike of 1902;; Roosevelt doesn't threaten union, like Cleveland did. He threatens the coal owners. threatens to Nationalize the coal mines. to TAKE them and run it using the US army. stepping in on the side of the unions --- first time! It worked!
Labor- roosevelt's trend breaker? Trend breaker: attacks big business for the sake of the unions; begins a whole new policy of conserving lands (national parks); instead of giving away the land to ppl, use it for public use. Govt. taking back land!

"Roosevelt Corollary" WHere? built off what? Latin America:: Built off of the Monroe Doctrine Acts as policemen to keep latin America in line. To keep them all stable so the fights don't affect trade. He'll step in if something disrupts trade! very active in their internal affairs

How uch land did taft conserve? how? who did he fire? more in 1 term than Teddy did in 2;; done legally;; if in doubt, gave it back;; fired head of US FOrest service. mad Teddy mad
Antitrust? Taft? Anti-Trust: initiated more antitrust suits in 1 term than Roosevelt in 2 terms! people think Taft was indifferent to anti-trust but really he did more than Roosevelt
What finally spit the 2 men? (Teddy and Taft) Suit? U.S. Steel Suit in 1907 split the 2 men makes a giant purchase in 1907 and there's a belief that if they buy a company that they will be a monopoly;; Taft sues bc it violated antitrust laws;; Teddy looks dumb bc he let it happen
WHat did taft appear as? rality? Taft began to appear as "non-Progressive" when in fact he was MORE Progressive than Roosevelt to Republicans, he's appearing more Conservative and they like him - even though the Progressives are kind of turning against him
"Dollar DIplomacy" Taft's foregin policy. motto? ihow was this different than Roosevelt? Invest rather than be confrontational;; Taft wanted to use wealth rather than use force (the Marines);invest money in foreign places to help, not send the Marines ;invest, don't use force
Mixed result of Dollar Diplomacy? maeks taft look bad. Americans hesitant to invest in Latin America & China doesn't make him look like a strong leader because the "Dollar Diplomacy" isn't working as well as he had hoped

Zimmerman Telegram, March (1917) germans plan a deal with MX. tell MX to join them and after they will the give them the MX session back do this bc this would distract the USA. trying to use MX as bait British secret service caught this, and gave it to USA.
April 2, 1917 April 2, 1917 --- USA declares war on Germany. Telegram pushes us over the edge

Treaty of Versailles (1919) Peace Treaty signed. 6 months after fighting stopped
wilson's 14 points? rejected or accepted? why? peace plan. reject all except League of Nations rejected it bc he said not to take revenge on germany! Just wants to end war and be done with it.
Allies revenge towards germany? Allies take territory, demobilize entire german army, make them pay for all the war debt. ;very harsh on germany;generation of Germans that want revenge
what is the only thing the Alllies adopt from wilson's 14? Allies adopt League of Nations voluntary organization to sit down and work out our problems tries to do things without violence
what is rejected by the US? why? problem? league of nations;; senate refuse to accept it bc we didn't want to be associated with the international stuff;; problem - we didn't take our leadership role. We just won, and world is looking to us, and we leave them on their own.
