The First 10 Amendments

QuestionAnswer
1st Amendment This amendment protects people freedom of speech, religion, press, petition, and assembly.
2nd Amendment This amendment prevents the federal government from taking away guns used by members of state militia.
3rd Amendment This amendment states that no citizen may be forced to house military troops unless approved by state law.
4th Amendment This amendment protects rights of people to feel secure; protects against unreasonable searches and seizures.
5th Amendment This amendment protects people against double jeopardy, self-incrimination (Miranda Rights) and guarantees due process.
6th Amendment This amendment includes a right to a speedy, fair trial, lawyer assistance, and the right to confront witnesses.
7th Amendment This amendment guarantees the right to a just trial in civil cases.
8th Amendment This amendment protects citizens against excessive bail and cruel and unusual punishment.
9th Amendment This amendment guarantees obvious rights-like the right to travel- not specifically mentioned in the Bill of Rights.
10th Amendment This states that any right not clearly given to the federal government by the Constitution belong to the states.
