Early Colonies

QuestionAnswer
Charter A legal paper that gives a man permission to start a colony.
Magna Carta A paper written in 1215 that gives the basic rights and freedoms for English citizens.
Parliament The government in England. It is split into two sections: the House of Lords and the House of Commons.
Cash Crop Crops grown and sold to make money
Toleration To allow differences
Toleration Act A law that allowed people to follow whatever Christian religion they wanted to in Maryland. (Catholic, Protestant)
Colony A piece of land where people settle, but are ruled by their old country. Ex. England and the 13 Colonies.
House of Burgesses The first government in the colonies where the people elected representatives. This happened in 1619 in Virginia.
Mayflower Compact While on the Mayflower, the Pilgrim men created laws to follow when they landed in Plymouth Rock. They created the idea of the people running the government and voting.
Self-Government Whatever the most amount of people want, happens. The people decide by voting or by someone who represents what the people want.
Monarchy A government ruled by a king or queen
Indentured Servant A person who wanted to come to America and told someone they would work for them for several years if they paid for their ticket.
Fundamental Orders of Connecticut Connecticut made this government in 1639. It gave free men the right to vote and limited power of the governor.
Plantation Large Southern farms, usually worked on by slaves.
New England Colonies Massachusetts, Connecticut, Rhode Island, and New Hampshire
Middle Colonies New York, Pennsylvania, Delaware, and New Jersey.
Southern Colonies Maryland, Virginia, North Carolina, South Carolina, and Georgia.
Settle to move onto a piece of land
Elect when a person is voted into a job
Representative a person who speaks up for what others want
