What is the name given to the commanders of the warships? It's another name for pirate. Sea dogs
Why did the queen protect the pirates? They shared their wealth with England
Who was England's best known sea dog? Sir Francis Drake
What lead Drake to claim California for England. After caturing a Spanish ship he did not want to go back the same way and went up the coast of CA
How were Magellan and Drake alike? They both sailed around the world
What did England do with all the wealth they got from the treasures they took from the Spanish ships? They built a powerful navy
Who was given permission to set up colony for England in North America? Sir Walter Raleigh
Who did Raleigh send first to set up a colony? Amadas and Barlowe
What did Raleigh name the area that was set up in North America? Virgina
What resource was valuable in the area Raleigh settled? Lumber (wood/forest)
Where did the colonists land when they went to America? On an island called Roanoke
What happened to the first settlers in Roanoke when the ship went back to England to get supplies? It didn't return so colonists left with Sir Francis Drake when he stopped in the area.
Raleigh sent a second group to America and chose whom to be governor? John White
Why did White return to England for supplies? They arrived too late in year to plant crops
Why couldn't White return to America for 3 years? England was at war with Spain and he had no ships because they were needed for battles
When White eventually returned to Roanoke what did he find? Nothing; one was there
What did White find on a tree that was interesting? Letters CRO
What do people think happened to the colonists? Some believed they went to live with Croatoan Indians.
Why is Roanoke called the Lost Colony? Because no one really knows what happened to all the settlers.
Why do some believe the colonists at Roanoke went to live with the Indians? The Croatoans became known as the Lumbees and today many of the Indians have the same English last names as the missing colonists
What is an armada? A fleet of warships
What important resource was found in Virginia, whihc today is North Carolina? Lumber
What is a raw material? A resource that can be used to make a product
In the 1500's was England's wealth greater than or less than Spain's wealth? Less than
Even though England was not wealthy, what advantage did they have? They had fast ships and skilled sailors
