How did the explorers know the Mississippi River could not be Northwest Passage? It flowed south
Why did the French turn back when they reached the Arkansas River? Feared the Spanish
What did the expedition of Marquette and Joliet accomplish? It opened the trade route in the Mississippi River Valley and built trading posts
What was the name of the settlement at the mouth of the Mississippi River that Sieur de la Salle found? Louisiana
Why was it difficult for the Louisiana settlement? It was hot and swampy
What caused the settlement of Louisiana to fail? La Salle was killed and they had no leader
What is a proprietary colony? A colony owned by a person and that person rules it.
What was La Salle's greate contribution? Claimed all the Mississippi River Valley for France
Why were the birchbark canoes valuable to the French? They could navigate in shallow water and could be carried around waterfalls and rapids. They could also be acrried overland between rivers
Where did Marquette and Joliet begin their Mississippi exloration? Northern Lake Michigan
Why was the Marquette and Joliet expedition important to France? It opened the Mississippi River Valley to French settlement.
How did Henry IV get merchants to build colonies in North America? King Henry IV said that any merchant who wanted to trade in America must build a colony there.
What is a plantation? Large farms
