Why did colonists come to the Americas in the 1500's Colonists came in search of gold, silver, and other treasure
Why did the Spanish need many workers? They needed workers to mine the gold and silver,grow crops, and provide services.
What two groups of people were forced to work as slaves for the Spanish? Native Americans and Africans
What caused the death of many Native Americans causing the Spanish to enslave Africans? Native Americans died fighting conquistadors, hunger, overwork, and disease.
What did the Spanish build to protect their lands in America? Presidios
What was the first permanent European settlement in what is now the U.S.? St. Augustine
What material was used to build Castillo San de Marcos? Coquina
What is coquina? Stone formed from broken seashells Stone formed from broken seashells
What is a hacienda? Large estates where the Spanish raised sheep and cattle.
How did the animals the Spanish brought change the way of life for the Native Americans? They used the horses for hunting and in war,the sheep for clothing and blankets, and cattle for food
What did the Spanish build to turn the Native Americans into Catholics as well as Spanish subjects? missions
Why did problems occur when the missions were built? The Native Americans were forced to work on the farms and ranches against their will.
What was the road that connected the missions and the presidios? El Camino Real
