Origins of State Names

StateOrigin of Name
New Hampshire Named by settlers after their hometown in Hampshire, England
Vermont A French word meaning "green mountain"
Massachusetts A Native American word meaning "people who live near the blue hill"
Rhode Island Originally the name the English colonists gave to the large island off its coast in the middle of the Narragansett Bay
Connecticut A Native American word meaning "on the long tidal river"
Maine A word English sailors used to describe the "mainland" as opposed to the islands offshore
