| 3. Iron Curtain | A term coined by Winston Churchill to describe the border between the USSR satellite states and Western Europe. |
| 4. Truman Doctrine | Truman's promise to help nations struggling against Communist movements. |
| 5. George F. Kennan | An American diplomat and leading authority on the Soviet Union whose article presented a blueprint for the policy of containment. |
| 6. Containment | The policy of keeping Communism contained within its existing borders. |
| 7. Marshall Plan | The foreign policy that offered economic aid to Western European countries after WWII. |
| 8. Berlin Airlift | The program in which the US and British pilots flew supplies to West Berlin during a Soviet blockade. |
| 9. NATO | The North Atlantic Treaty Organization-military alliance formed to counter Soviet expansion. |
| 10. Warsaw Pact | The military alliance of the Soviet Union and its satellite. |

| 18. Mutually Assured Destruction | A policy in which the US and the USSR hoped to deter nuclear war by building up enough weapons to destroy another. |
| 19. John Foster Dulles | An experienced diplomat who helped organize the UN after WWII. He endorsed the President's vision of the role of the US in the world. |
| 20. Massive retaliation | A policy of threatening to use massive force in response to aggression. |
| 21. Brinkmanship | A belief that only by going to the brink of war could the US protect itself against Communist aggression. |
| 22. Nikiyia Krushchev | The new leader after Stalin died in 1953. He had a meeting with Eisenhower in Geneva in 1955. |

| 24. Suez Crisis | An attempt by Britain and France to seize control of the Suez Canal in 1956. |
| 25. Eisenhower Doctrine | The policy of Eisenhower that stated that the US would use force to help any nation threatened by Communism. |

| 27. NASA | National Aeronautics and Space Administration-government agency that coordinates US efforts in space. |

| 29. Smith Act | The law that made it unlawful to teach or advocate the violent overthrow of the US government. |
| 30. HUAC | House Un-American Activities Committee- congressional committee that investigated possible subversive activities within the US. |
| 31. Hollywood Ten | A group of movie writers, directors, and producers who refused to answer HUAC questions about communist ties. |
| 32. Blacklist | A list of persons who were not hired because of suspected Communist ties. |
| 33. Alger Hiss | He worked on the New Deal agencies and helped organize the UN. Chambers accused him of being a Communist and an espionage agent. |
| 34. Julius and Ethel Rosenberg | They were charged with conspiring to pass secret information about nucluear science to Soviet agents. |
| 35. Joseph R. McCarthy | He was charged for saying that the State Department was infested with Communist agents. |
| 36. McCarthyism | A negative catchword for extreme, reckless charges of disloyalty. |
