Chapter 16 Vocab- 36 words

WordDefinition
1. Satellite state An independent nation under the control of a more powerful nation.
2. Cold War A worldwide rivarly between the US and the USSR.
3. Iron Curtain A term coined by Winston Churchill to describe the border between the USSR satellite states and Western Europe.
4. Truman Doctrine Truman's promise to help nations struggling against Communist movements.
5. George F. Kennan An American diplomat and leading authority on the Soviet Union whose article presented a blueprint for the policy of containment.
6. Containment The policy of keeping Communism contained within its existing borders.
7. Marshall Plan The foreign policy that offered economic aid to Western European countries after WWII.
8. Berlin Airlift The program in which the US and British pilots flew supplies to West Berlin during a Soviet blockade.
9. NATO The North Atlantic Treaty Organization-military alliance formed to counter Soviet expansion.
10. Warsaw Pact The military alliance of the Soviet Union and its satellite.
11. Jiang Jieshi A Nationalist leader who had fought a civil war against communists led by Mao Zedong. Had USA's support.
12. Mao Zedong He fought against Jiang with Soviet Union support. His promise to feed the people won him much support. After Jiang fled, Mao took over and the People's Republic of China was formed.
13. 38th Parallel The parrellel latitude line which split Korea in to for the control of US and USSR.
14. Douglas McArthur A WWII hero who had a plan to drive out North Koreans from the South because they had left with a limited supply, he planned to strike at the port of Inchon, the least expected place.
15. Limited war. A war fought to acheive only specific goals.
16. SEATO South East Asia Treaty Organization-defensive alliance aimed at preventing Communist aggression in Asia.
17. Arms Race A contest in which nations compete to build more powerful weapons.
18. Mutually Assured Destruction A policy in which the US and the USSR hoped to deter nuclear war by building up enough weapons to destroy another.
19. John Foster Dulles An experienced diplomat who helped organize the UN after WWII. He endorsed the President's vision of the role of the US in the world.
20. Massive retaliation A policy of threatening to use massive force in response to aggression.
21. Brinkmanship A belief that only by going to the brink of war could the US protect itself against Communist aggression.
22. Nikiyia Krushchev The new leader after Stalin died in 1953. He had a meeting with Eisenhower in Geneva in 1955.
23. Nationalize To place a resource under government control.
24. Suez Crisis An attempt by Britain and France to seize control of the Suez Canal in 1956.
25. Eisenhower Doctrine The policy of Eisenhower that stated that the US would use force to help any nation threatened by Communism.
26. CIA Central Intelligence Agency- US intelligence gathering organization.
27. NASA National Aeronautics and Space Administration-government agency that coordinates US efforts in space.
28. Red Scar The fear that Communists were working to destroy American way of life.
29. Smith Act The law that made it unlawful to teach or advocate the violent overthrow of the US government.
30. HUAC House Un-American Activities Committee- congressional committee that investigated possible subversive activities within the US.
31. Hollywood Ten A group of movie writers, directors, and producers who refused to answer HUAC questions about communist ties.
32. Blacklist A list of persons who were not hired because of suspected Communist ties.
33. Alger Hiss He worked on the New Deal agencies and helped organize the UN. Chambers accused him of being a Communist and an espionage agent.
34. Julius and Ethel Rosenberg They were charged with conspiring to pass secret information about nucluear science to Soviet agents.
35. Joseph R. McCarthy He was charged for saying that the State Department was infested with Communist agents.
36. McCarthyism A negative catchword for extreme, reckless charges of disloyalty.
