STERILIZATION Any process that completely removes or destroys all viable organisms (including bactrerial endospores,protozoan cysts,viruses,and prions)
DISINFECTION The use of a physical process or chemical agent to kill pathogens on inanimate objects
ANTISEPTIC A chemical agent used to kill or inhibit growth of microorganisms that is safe for use on living tissue
SANITIZER A chemical agent used to reduce microorganisms to levels that meet public health standards
BACTERIOSTATIC AGENT An agent that inhibits growth of bacteria while it is present
BACTERIOCIDE An agent that kills bacteria
VIRICIDE An agent that kills viruses
GERMICIDE A chemical agent that kills pathogenic microorganisms
DEGERM Treatment used to decrease the number of microbes (usually refering to skin)
