Ch.8 Vocabulary

Define words in chapter 8

QuestionAnswer
Wilderness Road A trail into Kentucky where a few Native Americans lived.
Republic A government where people chose representatives to govern them.
Articles of Confederation These were created by the Continental Congress in 1776 during the American Revolution. This was a limited form of government, but too limited.
Land Ordinance of 1785 Called for surveyors to stake six-mile plots of land called townships, in western lands.
Northwest Territory The land made into townships by the Land Ordinance of 1785.
Northwest Ordinance of 1787 Described how the Northwest Territory was to be governed.
Shay's Rebellion An uprising of farmers led by Daniel Shay's that protested the government and its debt laws, since many farmers were in debt and not given relief, but punishment by creditors.
Constitutional Convention A meeting of delegates from each of the thirteen states(Mostly heroes of the revolution like George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, etc.)that were meant to improve the Articles of Confederation, but ended up drafting, and writing the Constitution.
James Madison Took notes on the convention, and released those noted because he didn't want to keep it a secret.He also wrote the Constitution, and oversaw its drafting. He is dubbed, "The Father of the Constitution".
Virginia Plan The first plan by Edmund Randolph to create a brand new government. Eventually the plan for the Constitution.
New Jersey Plan There would be a legislature with only one house, and each state would only get one vote. This was similar to the Articles of Confederation.
Three-Fifths Compromise Three-Fifths of the slaves would be counted in setting direct taxes. It would also be used to determine representation in legislature.
Federalism A system of government where the power is shared between the federal government and the states.
Federalists People who supported the Constitution.
Anti federalists People who opposed the Constitution.
The Federalist Papers Writings by federalists in the newspaper, that supported the Constitution.
George Mason The most influential Virginian who opposed the Constitution aside from Washington.
Bill of Rights A set of rules that defined the peoples rights. These were the First ten amendments of the Constitution, and were ratified in 1791. One of the first acts of the new government.
