What Law prohibited colonists from moving west of the Appalachian Mts? The Proclamation of 1763
What were the reasons Britain felt justified in passing a law that prohibited westward expansion of the colonists? stope conflicts with Natives, kept colonists on coast where Britain controlled trade (Navigation Acts) and could take over fur trade.
For what 2 reasons did Britain raise taxes (or start collecting existing ones) after the French and Indian War? Troop expenses to enforce laws and huge debt from fighting the war.
Who was George Greenville? Prime Minister of Britain that tried to end smuggling of goods into the colonies.
What was the colonists objections to the vice-admirality courts? denied them the right to trial by jury (guaranteed in both the Magna Carta and the English Bill of Rights)v and assumed they were guilty until they proved their innocence.
What were writs of assistance and what right of the colonists did it violate? Legal documents that allowed customs officials to enter any location at any time to search for smuggled goods- search warrants
What Act was passed that actually lowered taxes in the hopes of convincing colonists not to smuggle but allowed the British to seize goods without going to court? The Sugar Act
What tax or law was passed that was the first direct tax placed on all the colonists (not just the merchants) and was placed on all printed material? The Stamp Act
What is a resolution? A formal expression of opinion!
What were the Sons of LIberty and who started it? Organization started to protest the Stamp Act. Sam Adams
What was the Stamp Act Congress? delegates from all the colonies met to draft a petition to the King and Parliament declaring that only their own assemblies could tax them
What does it mean to burn effigies? make rag figures representing what is being protested and burn it
What are boycotts and non-importation agreements? refusing to buy and pledges not to import (applied to British products in response to the Stamp Act)
What was the Declaratory Acts? Law passed on the day the Sugar Act was repealed saying that Parliament had the right to tax and make all decisions for the colonies.
What were the Townshend Acts? A tax on any imported goods to the colonies. Applied to glass, tea, and paper.
What were the Daughters of Liberty? Colonial Women who encouraged colonists to wear homemade cloths in protest of the Townsend Acts.
