Bipolar Disorder - types Manic, Depressed, Mixed
Causes of Bipolar disorder Catecholoemines, other biologic factors, genetics
Anti-manic agent Lithium - slows down, stabilized mood, requires blood checked constantly, hand tremors
Cyclothymia/ aka hypomania less than full blown mania, not severe enough to require hospitalization
OT tx for depression promote self worth, assist with self-expression/assertion, encourage expression of emotions, help acknowledge emotions, physical activities, success oriented activities, problem solving
OT for depression start with simple, ST, familiar activities; don't speak to like a child
Electroconvulsive therapy side effects memory problems, seizures
precautions against suicide determine potential, guard sharps, store potentially dangerous completed projects, watch for dangerous objects on unit
OT tx for bipolar disorders provide diversional activities, satisfaction vs wonderful, realistic goals, set limits, observe for frustration, reinforce acceptable behaviors, don't confront, try to get pt to understand consequences of behav
