What was "The Liberator?" A newspaper published by anti-slavery writer, William Lloyd Garrison.
What did the Transcendentalists do? Believed the most important truths in life transcended, or went beyond human reason; emotion is more important than reason.
What did he Aolitionists want to do? They wanted to end slavery completely in the U.S.
What was Civil Disobediance? It was the idea that people should have the right to disobey unjust laws if their consciences demand it.
Who were the Debtors. What did they result in? They were people who could not pay money they owed; ofter resulted in jail time.
What is Predestination? It was when God decided in advance which people would attain salvation after death; everything in life has already been decided/determined.
What were Rivals? Huge outdoor meetings
What was the Underground Railroad? A network of black and white people whofought against slaverythat helped slaves escape to freedom in the North or Canada.
Describe the Hudson River School. It was the first group of American artists that developed their own style; they painted vivid landscapes, nature and hardworking country people.
What was Individualism? The importance of each individual; your inner light/voice should guide you.
What was the Second Great Awakening? A major religious movement of the early 1800s, swept across America. Believed in Free Will.
Describe the Seneca Falls Convention. Aproximately 200 women & 40 men attended; the delegates in attendance approved a Declaration of Sentiments which proclaimed men & women to be equal.
What was the Temperance Movement? It was a campaign against alcohol abuse.
What was the Womens Rights Movement An organized campaign for equal rights; believe men & women are equals.
What was a Social Reform? It was an organized attempt to improve what injust or imperfect in society.
What did the American Colonization Society do? It proposed ending slavery & sending African Americans back to Africa.
