Republic A place where people choose representatives to govern them
Articles of Confederation In this plan the national government had few powers
Land ordinance of 1785 Called for surveyors to stake out six-mile-square plots called townships in the western land
Northwest territory The six-mile-square plots in the west later became know as Northwest territory
Northwest ordinance This described how the Northwest territory was to be governed
Shays rebellion A farmers rebellion started due to taxes and large debts.
Constitutional Convention 55 delegates sent to Philadelphia, half were lawyers others were merchants, doctors and planters. Went there to discuss how to form a government
James Madison Had the greatest contribution to the constitutional convention his notes are the most detailed picture we have of the debates
Virginia Plan Virginian delegates Madison, Randolph and others put together a plane for a government while they waited for the convention to start
New Jersey Plan This plan called for a legislature with only one house, in it each state would only have one vote.
Great Comprise Delegates could not agree which plan to take so they made the Great Comprise which made the smaller states happy because they would have a equal vote.
Three Fifths Comprise This was the plan that said that for southern states only three fifths of slave counted as the population
Federalism Is a system or government in which power is shared between the national government and the states
Federalists The people who supported the constitution where called federalists
Antifederalists People who opposed the constitution
The federalists papers Federalists wrote papers to answer antifederalists attacks, this is the best known of the papers
George Mason He was a antifederalist who believed that a bill of rights needed to be added to the constitution, legislative branch to have less power
Bill of Rights in 1791 10 amendments were created these were called the bill of rights
