Abbasids -desended from Abbas -ruled for a full 5 centuries -flourished for 2 centuries but slowly declines b/c of the rise of Turkish power -replaced the Umayyad caliphs in 750 AD
Sunni -from the traditional practices of Muhammed -claimed to the the true heirs of Muhammed -The Umayyads and their followers made up this group -the branch of Islam that accepts the 1st of the 4 caliphs as rightful successors of Muhammad
Umma -Community made by Muhammed -had a foundation of 5 basic religious concepts -considered to be Muslims -Located in Sumer
Hijra -journey to Medina -Muhammed and 75 men and closest relatives embarked on this journey -arrived in Medina in 622 -Marks the 1st year of the Islamic calendar
Uthman -the new (3rd) caliph of Islam -picked over his rival,Ali -stabbed to death in 656 -Muhammads son in law
Quarysh -polytheistic traditions -named after the Quarysh family - the tribe which Muhammed was a part of -merchant tribe during the 7th century
Shari'ah -islamic legal code -prohibits gambling, intoxication, and the lending of money with interest -restricts personal revenge and outlaws blood fueds -attempt for morality
5 pillars -the foundation of Umma -
Shi'ites -followers of ali -developed a religious hierarchy -developed a sense of persecution and martyrdom -believed that the 12th will reemerge someday
Qur'an -recited revelation of Muhammad -recorded words by sectretaries -sacred scripture of Islam -religion based off os the Qur'an
Khalid -in 632, lead forces against the Byzantine empire to persue Jihad -dubbed by Muhammed, "the Sword of Allah" -from the Meccan tribe of Quarysh -Muhammads companion
Umayyad -the 2nd of the 4 major caliphates -ruled by the Umayyad dynasty -established after Muhammed's death
Muhammed -born in 570 -prophet in Islam -claimed to have had an encounter with gID -his god was Allah
Jihad -translated to "holy war" in English -means "striving" or "struggling" -used in the military context of waging war -thought to be used for the purpouse of spreading Islamic faith also
Abu Bakr -member of the Quarysh clan -convinced nearly everyone that the position of caliph should continue -1st Muslim caliph after Muhammad's death -died in 634 due to illness
Ka'ba -most sacred site in Islam -destroyed during a war in 683 but was restored -house of monotheistic worhship -built by Abraham and Ishmal (son)
