| Ratify | to give official approval to. |
| Casualty | a military person killed, wounded or captured. |
| Offensive | the position of attacking or the attack itself. |
| Emancipate | to free from slavery |
| Border States | the states between the North and the South that were divided over whether to stay in the Union or Join the Confederacy. |
| Yankee | a Union Soldier |
| Rebel | Confederated Soldier, so called because of opposition to the established government. |
| total war | war on all aspects of the enemies life. |
| blockade | cutoff an area by means of troops or warships to stop supplies or people from coming in or going out; to close off a countries ports. |
| sectionalism | exaggerated loyalty to a particular region of the country |
| fugitive | someone who runs away from the law |
| secede | to leave the Union |
| popular sovereignty | allowing people to decide issues for themselves |
| border ruffians | pro-slavery supporters from missouri who travelled in armed groups and crossed into Kansas to vote in the 1855 election |
| civil war (in general) | a conflict between citizens of the same country |
| Arsenal | a storage place for weapons |
| martyr | a person who dies for a great cause |
| secession | withdrawl from the union |
| states rights theory | theory that says states are independent powers with the right to make decisions, such as voluntarily leaving the union |
