Ratify to give official approval to.
Casualty a military person killed, wounded or captured.
Offensive the position of attacking or the attack itself.
Emancipate to free from slavery
Border States the states between the North and the South that were divided over whether to stay in the Union or Join the Confederacy.
Yankee a Union Soldier
Rebel Confederated Soldier, so called because of opposition to the established government.
total war war on all aspects of the enemies life.
blockade cutoff an area by means of troops or warships to stop supplies or people from coming in or going out; to close off a countries ports.
sectionalism exaggerated loyalty to a particular region of the country
fugitive someone who runs away from the law
secede to leave the Union
popular sovereignty allowing people to decide issues for themselves
border ruffians pro-slavery supporters from missouri who travelled in armed groups and crossed into Kansas to vote in the 1855 election
civil war (in general) a conflict between citizens of the same country
Arsenal a storage place for weapons
martyr a person who dies for a great cause
secession withdrawl from the union
states rights theory theory that says states are independent powers with the right to make decisions, such as voluntarily leaving the union
abstain term that means not to cast votes
