what resulted in the french and Indian war? a rivalry between Great Britain and France in competition for North America land.
When and why did the French and Indian break out? 1754 and Great Britain challenged the French for control of land(now know as Ohio and Western Pennsylvania).
Why did Native Americans tend to support the French? They built forts rather permanent settlements as fur traders
Who won the French and Indian war? Great Britain
What end the French and Indian War? The Treaty of Paris, 1763
What did the Treaty of Paris, 1763 cause France to do? Turn over control of Canada to Great Britain
What did France surrender to Great Britain? It's claim to all land East of the Mississippi River with exception to New Orleans
What did the treaty give the British government control of? All Britain's American colonies
What did the colonist object to? The colonist objected to loss of control of their own affairs.
What idea did some Americans get? American Revolution
What did the Parliament do that caused tension to grow? They passed a law to tax colonist to pay for the cost of keeping large standing Armies in North America
What was the tax formed for? To protect both British possessions and the American colonist from attacks
What increased during the Proclamation of 1763 tensions
What was Americans forbidden from? Settling beyond the Appalachian Mountains in effort to limit their conflicts with Native Americans
What did the British American colonist believe? The King and Parliament was violating their rights as Englishmen
What rights did the Englishmen think were being violated? Protection from taxation without representation, the right to a trial by a jury of their peers, the protection from searches without warrants, protection from having troops quartered on their property
What parliamentary actions caused the colonist to lead to an open rebellion? To tax the colonist or force the tax laws (Stamp Act or Intolerable Act)
What did the Stamp Act require colonist to do? It required colonist to print any documents on paper bearing special stamps
What was buying stamps equal to? Paying taxes
Why was the Sons of Liberty created? American colonist opposed to British authority
What did the Sons of Liberty do to show their dislike to British rule They damaged British properties.
What did the Daughters of Liberty do? Join the Sons of Liberty in protesting British rule in North America
What did the Daughters of Liberty do so they would not rely on British imports? Wove hand-spun fabric to make clothes and other goods
What did the Intolerable Act do? Close ports of Boston as punishment for the Boston Tea party
What did the colonist call on the Continental Congress to do? Protest these action and form colonial militia to resist enforcement of these acts
Who did much of the planning for the first Continental Congress Committees of Correspondence
Why was the Committees of Correspondence formed? Because American Patriots could not communicate publicly
What did committees do within or between the colonies They would exchange written communication with other committees
What was the first organization linking the colonies and their opposition to British rule Committees of Correspondence
What did Thomas Payne publish and what month and year? Common Sense (pamphlet) in January 1776
What was Thomas Payne? A patriot philosopher
What did the Common Since do? Move many Americans to support independence from Great Britain
What was one way Payne persuaded Americans The Atlantic Ocean was to wide to allow British to rule America as well as American government
