Review of early explorers

QuestionAnswer
Marco Polo Left Italy at age 17 and returned after 24 years and explored Asia.
Christopher Columbus Left Italy and thought he could reach Asia by sailing west. he was credited with discovering America but he really did not.
Latitude (Parallels) Imaginary lines that run east and west on a map or globe.
Equator An imaginary great circle that runs around the center of the Earth. Zero degrees latitude.
Prime Meridian Meridian marked zero degrees longitude. Runs north and south through Greenwich, England.
Longitude (Meridian) Imaginary lines that run north and south on a map or globe.
Amerigo Vespucci Explorer that proved Columbus did not make it to Asia. America was named after him.
Vasco Nunez de Balboa Discovered the body of water that would later be called the Pacific Ocean.
Ferdinand Magellan Members of his expedition were the first to sail around the world.
