Boston Massacre The event when a lone british soldier was standing guard, and got in a fight with a colonists. A crowd gathered and said shoot if you dare. The soldier shot and killed 3 men. aka BLOODY MASSACRE
Boston Tea Party Colonists dressed up as indians in the middle of the night, and dumped 340 chests of tea into the Boston Harbor. occured on the night of December 16,1773

Battle of Lexington Concord 1775 First Battle of Rev. War. British went to destroy large supply of weapons. Paul Revere told minutemen to get ready to fight. The british destroyed all weapons they could find, as British retreated, minutemen shot 250 british dead on way back.

Second Continental Congress In May 1775, delegates gathered from 12 colonies in philadelphia, they discussed if they should go to war or not.
Battle of Bunker HIll Battle proved the colonists could take the British. During night colonists had dug in to Breed's Hill. Patriots low on gun powder and supplies, and lost, but British suffered 1,000 deaths, much more than patriots

Declaration of Independence A document that formally announced the colonies' break from Great Britain. Written by mostly John Adams, Robert R. Livingston, Thomas Jefforson, and Roger Sherman.

Patriots The colonists who chose to fight for independence (40-45% of Americans)
Loyalists (aka Tories) Those who stayed loyal to Great Britain
People "left out" of the Declaration of Independence Many feel the Declaration of Independence ignored many colonists. Abigail Adams (wife of samuel adams), wanted women's rights to be included in the document. also the rights of enslaved african americans were not listed, and slavery was completely legal
Who fought (groups) in the American Revolution The colonial forces, and the british forces were the main groups who fought during the American Rev. But also the french, spanish, and american indians.
Advantages and Disadvantages of British Forces British Forces: Advantages: -well-trained, well-equipped soldiers -large, powerful navy Disadvantages: -had to cross atlantic ocean -used mercenaries as soldiers
Advantages and Disadvantages of Colonial Forces Colonial Forces: Advantages: -fought for what they believed in -got help from european nations weaknesses: -untrained, poorly equipped soldiers -small navy
Battle of Trenton (1776) Washington would lose his army without victory; took a risk by attacking Hessians in Trenton, New Jersey Since they celebrated Christmas the day before, all Hessians were all asleep on Christmas night. Patriots took 900 prisoners, and won. important vic.
Battle of Saratoga (1777) British angry that Patriots were winning. They had plan to invade Canada, recapture Fort Ticonderoga, then sweep south to Albany. Became stuck in thick jungle,when army reached Saratoga, army was VERY outnumbered.Greatest victory for American Forces.
Battle of Yorktown (1781) Washington left French & American force on march to Virginia. Patriots surrounded British. This was the last battle in the American Rev. The Patriots won.
Treaty of Paris (1783) Took 2 years to come to this peace agreement, but finally Great Britian recognized the independence of the United States. British leaders also accepted American rights to settle and trade west of the original 13 colonies.
