Triangular Trade Colonial trade route between New England. The West Indies and Africa. Slaves were brought from W. Africa to the West Indies. Sugar and Molasses were taken to the colonies and rum, guns and gun powder was taken back to Africa.
Great Awakening A religous movement that swept through the colonies in the 1730s and 1740s. It affected social and political life in the colnies. Promoted ideas that effected politics
The French and Indian War 1754* During the late 1600s to mid-1700s France and Great Britain struggled for control of territory in North America. Gave most of the land west of the Ohio River Valley to the British. French lost most of its power.
Proclamation Act of 1763* Forbid British colonists to settle the land west of the Ohio River Valley in fear of Indian raids. Angered the colonists for they wanted to settle the land they had fought for
Samuel Adams Believed that parliament could not tax the colonists without there permission. Would play an important part in the American struggle for independence
Boycott Form of protest where they refuse to buy a certain product. Colonists refused to buy Briish goods that were taxed. Boycott was one of the most effective form of protest and caused parliament to repeal tax laws
Stamp Act 1765* The act that required colonists to pay for an official stamp, or seal, when they bought paper items. The Stamp Act was Parliaments first attempt to raise money by taxing the colonists directly, rather than by taxing imported goods
Repeal Repeal means to take away or take back. Parliament repealed some of thier taxes. Showed that Parliament could be affected by the colonists actions, they wanted to avoid conflict if possible.
Townshend Acts 1767* In June 1767 Parliament passed Townshend Acts. Placed taxes on glass lead paints and tea. Allowed tax collectors to check for smuggled items. Angered colonists because it took away power from colonial government
Boston Massacre 1770* Shootings in 1770 that took place in Boston because of colonists harassing a lone british soldier, then the soldier and others shot three colonists in the act. This gave colonists a reason to fight for independence
Boston Tea Party 1773* Night of 12/16/73 colonists disguised as Indians sneaked onto three tea-filled ships. They dumped over 340 chests of tea into boston harbor, and they went home to remove the disguises. Was the first act of war against the British done by the colonists
Sons of Liberty Secret society created in response to British tax laws, used violence to terrorize tax collectors. Showed colonists were unhappy with the British tax laws; colonists could organize and were willing to take on British
Intolerable Acts 1774* In the Spring of 1774 Britian passed the Coercive Acts (Intolerable acts). Acts had 4 major effects:1.Boston Harbor was closed until tea=paid off.2.Mass charter cancelled.3.Royal officers accused of crimes were sent back to Britian.4.Gen. T. Gage new Gov.
First Continental Congress 1774* A gathering in the fall of 1774 of delegates from throughout the colonies. At Carpenters hall, Philadelphia. Had debates and decided on how to deal with the british. First attempt to unite colonies by making a GROUP decision
Battle of Lexington-Concord 1775* night of 4/18/74 700 british soldiers headed for concord. Spies got news and informed Sons of Liberty. Paul Revere, William Dawes and Samuel Prescott set off on horseback to alert the britishs arrival. First major battle in the revolution
Minutemen untrained/unprofessional memebers of the civilian volunteer army. First soldiers used in the revolution
Second Continental Congress 1775* May 1775, delegates from 12 colonies met in Philadelphia. still far from unified. Disputed against fighting the british. compromised: Would not break away yet but declared mass militia to be Continental Army
Battle of Bunker Hill 1775* Patriots dug bunker to fight British. Made it to attack by suprise and defend Boston. first big battle of the Revolution and proved the colonists could take on the British
Common Sense a 47 page pamphlet published in Jan 1776 that urged separation from Britian. Bold idea that got colonists thinking of separation and fighting for their freedom
Declaration Of Independence July 4,1776* The Dec. of Ind. formally announced the colonies break away from Britian. Set USA away from Britain declaring it a new country (all free).
Patriots Colonists who wanted and fought for freedoom and independence. people wanted to fight and be true americans and wanted freedom
Loyalists Sometimes called tories. Loyalists were colonists who remained loyal to britian. part of population left and tore apart families showed that not everyone wanted indpendence.
People "left out" of the Dec. of Ind. Women and Slaves were left out of the Dec of Ind
Who fought (groups) in the American Revolution The French, Spanish, And Prussain(Germany) helped the colonists whereas some of the native americans helped the british
Advantages & Disadvantages of British & Colonial Forces colonists: Strengths: Fought for a reason, got help from Euro nations. Weaknesses: Untrained, poorly equipped soldiers, small navy. British: Strengths: Well trained, Large navy, Weaknessses: had to cross ocean, used mercenaries as soldiers
Battle Of Trenton 1776* On christmas night Washingtonsailed across the Delaware and attacked Trenton, NJ where the Hessians guarded. Patriots took over 900 prisoners. Huge win iin thee Rev.
Battle Of Saratoga 1777* The Greatest Victory in American History. British planned to cut off New England. Plan failed and Patriots won
Battle of Yorktown 1781* Last major Battle in the American Revolution. Patriots and others surrounded the British in Yorktown and won the Rev.
Treaty of Paris 1783* The Treaty where Great Britain recognized the Independence of the United States.
