American Revolution Chandler Waldal Period 4

1) Triangular Trade? slaves to the americans; trade between Britian and America and Africa; provided needed goods for all areas; goods were smuggled to the colonies
2) The Great Awakening? religeous movement that swept through the colonies in the 1730s and 1740s; caused people to want equality/freedom
3) The French and Indian War? (1754) - conflict between NE and Wampanoag - the colonial militiacivilians serving as soldiers - fought American Indian warriors -both sides attacked, killing men, women, and children - fighting ended
4) Proclamation Act (Line) of 1763 -This law banned Brit. settlement west of Appalachian Mountains; issued by King George the 3rd; Brit. leaders feared that more attacks would take place if colonists kept moving onto American Indian lands
5) Samuel Adams -believed that Parliament could not tax the colonists without their permission; this man and Otis summed up in slogan "No taxation Without Representation"
6) Boycott -refusal to buy certain products; colonists refused to buy British goods that were taxed (paper, paint, tea, glass); very affective way of protesting; Parliament repealed some of the taxes as a result
7) Stamp Act of 1765 -Required colonists to pay for an additional stamp, or seal, when they bought paper items; Prime Minister Grenville proposed this Act; the tax had to be paid on legal documents, licences, newspapers, etc.
8) Repeal -remove or take back; Parliament repealed many of the taxes on the colonists; showed the colonists could cause Parliament to change; colonists had power
9) Townshend Acts (1767) placed duties on lead, glass, paints, paper, and tea; British officials used wirsts of assistance to enforce this Act; this allowed tax-collectors to search for smuggled goods
10) Boston Massacre (1770) many conflict b/tween Bostonians and British March 5, 1770: British struck colonists and shot 3 men, including Crispus Attucks; soldiers and officers were charged with murder
11) Boston Tea Party (1773) December 16, 1773: three ships loaded with tea from British East India Company arrived in Boston;colonists diguised as Indians sneaked onto 3 tea filled ships; dumped 340 tea chests into Boston Harbor
12) Sons of Liberty revolutionary groups; women called themselves Daughters of Liberty; sons called themselves sons of liberty; actions helped the colonists to start the American Revolution; were the main force in protesting against the British taxes
13) Intolerable Acts (1774) Brit. prime minister was furious when he found out about the Bost. Tea Party; he decided 2 punish Boston; called these acts coercive acts (Boston Harbor was closed until Boston paid 4 tea, Mass. charter was canceled, Gen. Thomas Gage bcame new gov. of MA
14) First Continental Congress (1774) gathering of delegates from throughout the colonies; they engaged debates in Phil., Patrick Henry and other radicals believed that violence was unavoidable.
15) Battle of Lexington-Concord (1775) first battle of the Revolutionary War; force of 700Brit. soldiers headed for Concord; Thomas Gage heard that militia's storehouse had major weapons, sent soldiers 2 destory it; battle ended in minutes; Brit went on2 Conc./ destroyed weapons they found
16) Minutemen members of the civilian volunteer militia; militia called themselves minutemen; showed their determinationp; 1st colonists to come in coflict with the Brit.
17) Second Continental Congress (1775) delegates from 12 colonies met in Phil; still far from unified; compromissed and did not break away from Britian; declared Mass. militia 2 be Cont. Army
