Triangular Trade A system in which goods and slaves were traded among the americas, Britain, and Africa. Exchanged goods like beef and flour with plantation owners in the west indies for sugar, some of which they shipped to Britain.
Great Awakening A Religious movement that swept through the colonies in the 1730s and 1740s. Changed religion. Involved important leaders like John Edwards and George Whitfield. Religious Revival in America prior to the Revolutionary War.
French and Indian War 1754 Tensions arisen between New England colonists and the Wampanoag. tensions erupted in a conflict called the King Philips War. Colonial Militia vs american indian warriors.
Proclamation Act 1763 Banned british settlement West of the App. Mountains. Also ordered settlers to leave the upper Ohio River Valley. King George Issued this law.
Samuel Adams At A Boston town meeting in May 1764, local leader Samuel Adams agreed with James Otis. He believed that Parliament could not tax the colonists without permission. " No Taxation without Representation." Spread throughout the colonies.
Boycott A popular method of protest. 1st colonial Boycott started in NY in 1765. Colonists hoped that their efforts would hurt the British economy and might convince Parliament to end the new taxes.
Stamp Act 1765 Required colonists to pay for an official stamp, or seal, when they bought paper items, like, playing cards, legal documents, licenses, newspapers, and pamphlets. Colonists who refused to buy stamps could be fined or sent to jail.
Repeal means to due away with. Parliament repealed the stamp act in 1776.
Townshend Acts 1767 June 1776. Parliament passed Townshend acts. Placed duties on lead, glass, paints, paper, and tea. Allowed tax collectors to search for smuggled goods. As a result, another boycott was held against buying many British goods.
Boston Massacre 1770 Shootings between the colonists and the British. A lone British soldier standing guard had an argument with a colonist and struck him. Troops arrived. Soldiers fired into the crowd instantly killing 3 men. news spread with propaganda. on king street.
Boston Tea Party 1773 On December 16, 1773, colonists sneaked on to three tea-filled ships. After dumping over 340 tea chests into the Boston Harbor, the colonists headed home to remove their disguises as indians.
Sons of Liberty A secret society formed by colonists. Samuel Adams helped organize the group in Boston. This group sometimes used violence to frighten tax collectors.
Intolerable Acts 1774 In the Spring of 1774 Coercive Acts were passed. Acts had several effects: 1. Boston harbor closed until boston paid for ruined tea. 2. Mass. charter canceled. 3. Royal officials accused of crimes were sent to trial. 4. Gen. Thomas Gage became new gov of
First Continental Congress 1774n A gathering in the fall of 1774 of delegates from throughout the colonies. delegates from Penn. and NY had strict orders to seek Peace. Halted all trade with britain and alerted the Colonial militias to prepare for war. Drafted a Dec. of rights.
Battle of Lexington-Concord 1775 the 1st battle of the Revolutionary War. Paul revere warned the min men that the british were coming." shot heard Round the World" Battle ended in min. with only few shots fired. 8 min men lay dead and 10 wounded. while the british fled.
Minute Men Members of the civilian Volunteer militia. called minute men because they were ready in just minutes.
Second Continental Congress 1775 On May 1775, delegates from 12 colonies met in Philadelphia for the second Continental Congress. 2nd gathering of delegates from the colonies was still far from unified. Declared the mass. militia to be the Continental army, carry out the fight against b
Battle of Bunker Hill 1775 This Battle Proved that the colonists could take on the British.The British won but they suffered more than 1,000 Casualties, about double the american Losses.
"Common Sense" Written By Thomas Paine. A 47-page pamphlet published in January 1776 that urged separation from Great Britain. Sold Half a million Copies. "common Sense" Changed the way many colonists viewed their King.
Thomas Jefferson A comitee member. Jefferson was the main writer of the Declaration of Independence. He argued that the colonies had the right to break from Britain. Influenced by the Enlightenment.
Declaration of Independence July 4th, 1776 Formally announced the colonies' break away from Great Britain. Thomas Jefferson, John Adams, Benjamin Franklin, Robert R. Livingston, and Roger Shermon made up the comittee. On July 4th, 1776, the Continental Congress aprooved the Dec. of Ind.
Patriots Colonists who chose to fight for Indepenence. 40 to 45 percent of Americans were Patriots.
Loyalists Sometimes called Tories, were those who remained loyal to Great Britain. 20 to 30 percent of americans were loyalists.
People "left out" of the Declaration of Independence Slaves and women did not get the rights to the Declaration of independence. Abigail Adams tried to influence her husband, a delegate, to include women in the Declaration. Although many women were patriots, the declaration excluded them.
Who Fought (groups) in the American Revolution The Colonists and the British fought. Basically, it was fought between Britain and its 13 colonies in north America which had recently declared them selfs independent.

Battle of Saratoga 1777 The Battle of Saratoga in New York Was the greatst victory yet for the american forces. The Victory gave the patriots something they had been desperately seeking: foreign Help. France and Spain. Holland joined patriot as well.
Battle of Yorktown 1781 The last major battle of the American Revolution. Low on $ to buy supplies for soldiers. Patriots surrounded Cornwallis with some 16,000 soldiers. French naval fleet seized control of chesapeake Bay, preventing British Ships from rescuing stranded army
Treaty of Paris 1783 Great Britain Recognized the independence of the United States. A peace agreement made by delegates. Set America's borders. British leaders accepted American rights to settle and trade west of the 13 colonies.
