charter a document issued by a government that grants specific rights to a person or company. Virginia Company
John Smith was sent from London to lead Jamestown. He created tough rules. The people of Jamestown worked harder under Smith. Yet Smith raided the Indians to get more food.
Representative Government the form of government in which voters elect people to make laws for them- House of Burgesses.
Pilgrim a person who takes a religious journey. The pilgrims came from the netherlands to settle in Jamestown, but got lost and founded Plymouth.
Squanto a local Native American who helped the pilgrims learn to farm and fish. Helped in the first thanksgiving.
John Winthrop the Puritan leader who is a respected landowner and lawyer.
Toleration recognition that other people have the right to different opinions. HTe Puritans did not believe in religious toleration.
Roger Williams a minister of a church in Salem who believed the Puritans should split entirely from the Church of England. He believed that people should by land from the Natives. He was forced to leave Massachusetts Bay and founded Providence.
Anne Hutchinson a Boston woman who questioned some of the Puritans teachings. She was put on trial and expelled from MA. She established a settlement on an island on Rhode Island and then traveled to NY.
town meeting an assembly of townspeople that decides local issues. They set local taxes and elected people to run the town. It allowed people to speak their mind. No male heads of house. Puritans.
Proprietary Colony a colony created by a grant of land from a monarch to an individual or family. This right was given to establish NJ.
Royal Colony a colony controlled directly by the English King. NJ
William Penn a Quaker leader who knew King Charles II. He wanted a place for Quakers to live where they would be safe from persecution. He used his connections to get a charter from the king to create PA. It was his "Holy experiment" He was nice to the Indians. Phili
The Backcountry a frontier region extending through several colonies, from PA to GA. Families lived on isolated lands in one room shacks. There were few slaves and little rank.
Nathaniel Bacon the leader of the frontier settlers. He organized a force of 1,000 westeners and began killing Natives. The governor declared bacon and his men rebels. He reacted by attacking Jamestown and burning it.
Lord Baltimore he passed the Act of Toleration in MD. It welcomed all Christians and gave adult male Christians the right to vote and hold office. It was a step toward religious toleration.
James Oglethorpe wanted a colony where there would be protection for English debtors. He founded Georgia.
debtors people who owe money. THe government could imprison debtors until they paid what they owed. Which meant that they could never work to pay it back.
Plantation a large farm especially in a hot country where crops such as cotton, sugar, and rice are grown. The system created a society of slaves and ranks-Tidewater area.
Borderland lands along a frontier that bordered Mexico that were used to protect Mexico from other European powers. FL-Tx-CA
Junipero Serra A missionary that helped to colonize California. His first mission-San diego. He also founded San Francisco and Las Angeles.
Presidios military posts that were used to defend missions.
Pueblos civilian towns that were centers of farming and trade. There was a plaza at the center that was used for business and worship.
Mayflower Compact Pilgrims sailed on the MAYFLOWER. They arrived north-didn't need to follow VA rules. MAYFLOWER COMPACT-41 men signed-follow "just and equal laws" Officeholders-elected by adult males. It was the 1st document that americans claimed to govern themselves.
House of Burgesses The VA REPRESENTATIVE GOVERNMENT that was elected. They could pass laws & set taxes. It shared power with VA governor-he could veto its actions. 1st rep. government in North America.
