Vocab Terms

QuestionAnswer
King George III The British monarch who enforced the Proclamation of 1763.
Quartering Act A British cost saving method that required colonists to "quarter", or house British troops and provide supplies.
Revenue Income
Sugar Act Placed a tax on sugar, molasses, and other products shipped into the colonies. It also enforced harsh punishment to smugglers.
Stamp Act Required legal and commercial documents to carry a stamp showing a tax had been paid.(Diplomas, Contracts, Wills,etc.)
Patrick Henry A member of the Virginia house of Burgesses that called for a resistance to the Stamp Act.
Boycott A refusal to buy, or make use of.
Sons of Liberty The most famous secret society that opposed the British.
Crispus Attucks An African American born into slavery, was killed in the Boston Massacre for his country.
Townshend Acts An act by Englishmen, Charles Townshend to increase revenue in the colonies. 1. Suspended New York's Assemblies until they provide housing for troops. Import taxes in colonies.
Writs of Assistance To enforce the Townshend Acts. These were search warrants to enter homes or business' to search for smuggled gods
Samuel Adams One of the Adams cousins who led the October 1767 boycott of British goods. He was a leader of the Boston Sons of Liberty. Urged colonists to resist British controls. B
Boston Massacre On March 5,1770, tension broke into British anger. They massacred a lot of people. Only Crispus Attucks and four other laborers were killed. The British who fired the shots were arrested for murder.
John Adams A lawyer and cousins of Samuel Adams defended the redcoats that started the Boston Massacre.
Committees of Correspondence Created by Samuel Adams, the committees of correspondence sent letters from committee to committee to keep each other updated on colonial affairs.
The Boston Tea Party On the evening of December 16, 1773, a group of the Sons of Liberty disguised themselves as Native Americans and boarded three tea ships and dumped all the tea into the harbor.
Intolerable Acts In 1774 Parliament issued acts to punish the Massachusetts colony and serve as a warning to others. 1. Close the port of Boston until colonists payed for the smuggled tea. 2. British officials accused of crimes stood trial in Britain.
Militia A small force of armed civilians who pledged to defend their community.
Minutemen The people in a militia. Ready to act in a minute.
First Continental Congress A delegate meeting with representatives from all the colonies except Georgia. 1. Banned all trade with Britain until the Intolerable acts were repealed. 2.Each colony training troops.
Paul Revere Spread news on the British troop movements."The British are coming" The Midnight Ride.
Lexington and Concord The first battles of the Revolutionary War.
Loyalists British supporting colonists.
Patriots The colonists who supported liberty and freedom from Britain.
Ethen Allen Led the Green Mountain Boys into the battle of Bunker Hill.
The Second Continental Congress Created the Continental Army. Met in Philadelphia.
Artillery Cannon and large guns.
Continental Army Led by George Washington composed of the patriots.
Benedict Arnold An officer who had played a role in the victory at fort Ticonderoga.
The Declaration of Independence The document that declared America's freedom from Britain.
Thomas Jefferson The writer of the Declaration of Independence.
