Town boosters promoted their towns to get: businesses to come to the towns to give people more jobs.
Why were railroads important to S.C.? They helped people ship their goods to market which helped our industries to grow.
How did the rise of textile mills cause a great migration? People left their farms to work in mills.
The effects of the Jim Crow laws. Schools were segregated, they caused riots between whites and blacks, and voting laws were unfair.
The price of cotton fell after WWI because... After the war, cotton was no longer needed for the army.
Why did people migrate to cities and other states? They had a hard time finding jobs, rural areas had poor sanitatin services and no electricity.
In what way did tourism help S.C.'s economy? People spent money at hotels, shops, and restaurants, which created jobs.
What did the Great Depression cause? Unemployment and poverty.
What was President Roosevelt's plan to end the Great Depression? The New Deal
A way in which the CCC helped S.C. It worked with the environment and built state parks.
How did the invention of electricity affect S.C.? It changed the way people worked, played and lived. Streets and homes had electric lights.There were electric washing machines, irons, stoves, refrigerators and vacuum cleaners.
How did the invention of the telephone affect S.C.? It made communication easier.
How did the invention of automobiles affect S.C.? In time people could travel faster and easier.
What is illiteracy? Not being able to read.
What did President Woodrow Wilson do about child labor? He outlawed it.
What are two ways South Carolinians helped in WWI. Young men joined the armed forces, and we helped build ships and weapons for the war.
How did WWI help cotton farmers? Soldiers needed many things made of cotton, so farmers planted more and sold more and made more money.
What is a depression? A time when many people can't make enough money to care for their families.
What are two of the New Deal agencies. CCC and WPA
