Chapter 3 SS: English Colonies in North America

What were the Fundamental Orders? They were a written plan of government for Connecticut that guaranteed the right to vote to all men who were members of the Puritan church.
Who was Maryland founded by? Cecil Calvert (Lord Baltimore)
New York was named after this person because it honored this new proprietor... James, the Duke of York.
What discouraged people from settling in New York? High rents to farmers working the land.
Why did Virginia have trouble growing their tobacco (their main cash crop)? They tried putting Indians to work- the Indians weren't used to farming, and they died. Then, they tried indentured servants- but they eventually earned their freedom. Finally, they tried slaves, which costed more but they lasted longer.
Those who worked for Virginia but eventually earned their freedom... Indentured servants.
What is New Haven? It is separate colony of Connecticut that was formed by Puritans that agreed to live by the word of God.
The Quakers believed to treat people with this... also stated in the Great Law of 1682... Freedom & Equality
Virginia ended up using enslaved Africans to farm the land because... They lasted longer and they could never earn their freedom.
Why did Roger Williams settle in Rhode Island? To achieve freedom of religion.
The Northern section of the original 13 colonies is called what? The New England Colonies.
What is an economic policy in which nations tried to gain wealth by controlling trade and establishing colonies? Mercantilism
What is a crop, such as tobacco, sugar, and cotton, raised in large quantities and sold for profit? Cash Crop
What is a formal document issued by the king that outlined a colony's geographic features, boundaries, and how that colony would be governed. a Charter
What was ruled by the people? a Democratic government.
What was slave trade? the business of capturing, transporting, and selling people as slaves.
What was the last colony? Georgia
The Mayflower Compact is most comparable to what? the US Constitution.
