Why did the theories of Galileo and Copernicus threaten the views of the church? His ideas challenged the christian teaching that the heavens were fixed in position to earth, perfectly.
What did Copernicus Discover? He developed the sun-centered universe theory.
What did Galileo Discover? He realized that the earth moved around the sun.
What impact did renaissance ideas have on medicine? People (Galen) started doing autopsies and Harvey explained blood circulation. Robert Boyle created the basic structure of our periodic table.
What did Isaac Newton do? He created the ideas of Gravity.
Define Renaissance... Means: Re-Birth. Education blossomed, Religions came about and people started questioning the catholic church.
What was the ideal Renaissance man like? All-around talented person.
Three reasons why the renaissance started in Italy... 1. Mediterranean sea allowed trade. 2. In the center of Rome. 3. Roman Catholic church was there.
Who were the Medicis? Rich Bankers and Merchants (a family) who took over Florence and supported artists.
What were some Humanist ideas? Focused on Worldly things such as education, art, religion, and creativity. They studied the past to have a better understanding of the present.
How did art show the humanistic style of the renaissance? They believed that education stimulates the creative thinking and they painted portraits of biblical characters.
What was Machiavelli's ideas on politics? He believe you should put yourself first and do whatever it took to stay the leader.
What did Erasmus do? made religion reachable to every social class (vernacular) and allowed people to learn.
Three results of the invention of the printing press: 1. people were able to gain knowledge 2. mass production of books 3. people were moved into different social classes.
What does the word reform mean? to change
Who was Martin Luther? He was a reformer. He was going to be a priest, but decided against the catholic's ways. Started Lutheranism. 95 thesis.
What did martin luther try to change? the bible, made it into a vernacular and his 95 thesis.
According to John Calvin there are two kinds of people.... Saints & Sinners.
How could you tell what kind of person someone was? You looked at how they acted and treated other people and how faithful they were.
What caused Henry the 8th to break away from the church? He wished to have a divorce and the pope wouldn't grant him one.
Three ways that the catholic church responded to the reformation; -Called the council of Trent, 1545 -Burned people at the steak -started more catholic schools.
What is a patron? a person who provides financial support for the arts.
Perspective? artistic technique used to give paintings and drawings a three dimensional effect
Erasmus? Made a greek version of the bible into a vernacular.
Gutenberg? Used the printing press to mass-produce the bible.
Indulgences? A way to buy forgiveness.
Predestination? Calvinism. your heaven/hell is predetermined
95 thesis? stated all of the things wrong about the catholic church by Luther.
Who was the primary first humanist? Petrach.
What city was in the center of the italian renaissance? Florence.
What did Machiavelli write? The prince. (a realistic look at gov.n't and power)
