Revolutionary Vocab

Words used in the study of the American Revolution

worddefinition
patriot A colonist who wanted independence from Britain
monopoly to have complete control over a product or service
loyalist a person who does not want to break away from England and form a new country.
Parliament The group of people in England that make the laws.
militia an army of volunteer soldiers
blockade to stop ships from entering or leaving the harbor
revolution to throw out the present system of government and replace it with a new one.
proclamation An official paper that explains a law
boycott to refuse to do or buy something in order to show your disapproval.
petition a formal letter that explains the complaints and desires of a group of people and is signed by many people in order to bring on a change.
treason to betray and go against one's country
representation when a group of people have one person who states the opinion of the group.
liberty freedom
Sons of Liberty a secret group of colonists who protested against the English.
minuteman colonists who were ready to fight in a moment’s notice.
to quarter colonists who were ready to fight in a moment’s notice.
intolerable unbearable
"Redcoats" a term the colonists used to describe the British soldiers
Hessians German soldiers that were paid to fight on the British side
ally / allies a friend who helps fight in a war
