| transcontinental railroad | railroad that went all across the country ~ made travel much easier |
| carpetbaggers | people from the north that went to the south to help rebuild it, but also to take advantage and make money |
| scalawags | people in the south that helped the union and wanted to rejoin after the war |
| exodusters | black people that moved to the Great Plains to farm |
| sodbusters | farmers in the Great Plains ~ it was dry and hard to farm land |
| Freedmen's Bureau | organization the helped blacks and the poor to get jobs and medical care |
| impeach | to fire a government official ~ usually the president |
| assassination | killing a government leader |
| Andrew Johnson | president after Abraham Lincoln |
| radical republican | people in the north (Congress) who wanted the south to be punished for what they did. wanted to make it hard to come back into the union. |
| Abraham Lincoln | president who freed the slaves, won the Civil War, and was assassinated. |
