Intro to History

QuestionAnswer
Longitude The lines that run north and south. They measure the distance from the Prime Meridian.
Latitude The lines that run east to west. They measure the distance from the Equator.
Prime Meridian An imaginary line that goes North to south at 0 degrees longitude; it splits the earth into Eastern and Western Hemispheres.
Equator An imaginary line that goes east to west at 0 degrees Latitude; it splits the earth into Northern and Southern Hemispheres
Compass Rose A symbol on a map that shows directions. Ex. North, South, East, West
Key/Legend Lists and explains the symbols, lines, and colors on a map.
Artifact A tool or object made by humans in the past.
Primary Source Materials written or created by people who lived during the time period. (ex. letter written by a person during the time period, painting painted by a person who saw the event happen)
Geography/er Studying the earth and its physical features (mountains, rocks, oceans).
History/ian Studying a group of people and their past.
Physical Feature The natural land and water forms on the earth like mountains, rivers, oceans, plains.
Natural Resources Any animal, tree, or water found in an area and used by people to survive.
Hemisphere One half of the earth.
Secondary Source Materials written or created by people who DID NOT LIVE during the time period (ex. textbook)
Region An area that has something different than the areas around it.
Archeology / ist Studying the past by looking at artifacts.
Climate The normal weather in an area over a long time.
Anthropology / ist The study of humans, where they come from and how they lived.
Environment An area that has certain weather and land that are different from other areas.
Sociology / ist The study of society. (How people live, thin, and why they do the things they do.)
Economy / ist The study of money and how people use it.
