Why was the literacy rate higher in New England that in other regions? 1. Puritans were more conscious of the need to educate their children. 2. Outside of new England, farms and plantations were spread out over the country-side so their children didn’t have the privilege of attending village schools or dame schools.

What is the typical modern view of the Puritans? Why is this view inaccurate? The misconception about the Puritans was that they were all work and no play. It is innnacurate because they did for fun but they mainly only gathered at church on Sundays.
What are some examples of social gatherings on the frontier? Frontier families gathered together for social interactions at barn raisings, corn husking and quilting. This gave them the opportunity to have fun and work at the same time
How did the Great Philadelphia Wagon Road aid in developing the American Frontier? Because many small towns started around inns along the way. It also provided a way to travel from Philadelphia to Georgia
Why was the birth rate higher in America than in Europe in the 1700s? It was higher because women here were getting married younger than in England, also because in America the men outnumbered the women by 3 to 1 vs in England there were more women than men
Name at least three deadly diseases that American colonists faced. Small pox, dysentery and diphtheria
Why was education so important to the Puritans? To provide that basics skills and the ability to read the bible
Where was the firs public library in America established? When? Charleston, South Carolina in 1698
How did the Puritans reflect a Christian view of leisure? They didn’t believe that you should put god to the side when you put on your play cloths, they believed that you should honor God in all things even when playing
Scott-Irish They were Presbyterian Scots from the protestant colony of Ulster in Northern Ireland
Great Philadelphia Wagon Road Was an old Iroquois Indian trail. Was chief access to backcountry settlements from Virginia to Georgia
Pennsylvania Dutch They were German and through the corruption of the name became known as the Pennsylvania Dutch

Hornbook A book that had the abc’s and the Lord’s prayer, shaped like a paddle and covered in animal horns
New England Primer Was the standard text throughout the colonial period to learn basic grammar and vocabulary, moral lessons and a short catechism
Dame schools A village school taught by either a widow or the village spinster
Poor Richard's Almanack Was one of the most popular reading pastimes of the late colonial period. It taught moral sayings with wit in it.
Why did so many colonists prefer large families? They preferred large families because many children died in infancy and many people depended on farming as a way of life and the more hands to help, the better
Why were epidemics more prevalent in eithteenth-century America tha in the previous century? As the cities grew, more people moved into them and many became over crowded so when there were diseases they spread rapidly, many soldiers sent to fight the Indians brought many diseases from England and other countries.
What were the two largest groups of non-English settlers in the colonies? They were Scott-Irish and the Pennsylvania Dutch
Who were the "Pennsylvania Dutch"? Why did they settle in Pennsylvania? They were German. They were attracted to Pennsylvania by the religious freedom of penn’s quacker commonwealth and the rich farm country
