Who was the first state to end the instition of slavery? Pennsylvania. Remember, the Quakers were against slavery.

What did the Alien, Naturalization and Sedition Acts do? They provided an extension of the naturalization period for immigrants, a provision for the President to deport any alien, a provision for jailing or fining those who spoke out against the President or government
Describe the election of 1800. This was an election between Democratic Republican Thomas Jefferson, Federalist John Adams and Democratic Republican Aaron Burr. There was a tie between Burr and Jefferson. Jefferson won because Alexander Hamilton pitched him the support.
What is the significance of Marbury V Madison? This was the result of Adams' last minute appointment of Federalist judges (midnight justices). Supreme Court case that established Judical Review (the ability for Congress to declare acts unconstitutional)
What was the Louisiana Purchase? Purchased for $15 million from France by Thomas Jefferson. He wasn't sure if it was constitutional or not, but it doubled the size of the United States. He sent Lewis and Clark to explore.
What was the Embargo Act? The Embargo Act of 1807 cut off US shipping with all foreign countries. This was part of Thomas Jefferson's second term.
What was the name of the congressional group that forcefully advocated war with Great Britain in 1812? The War Hawks
What was the Treaty of Ghent? This treaty ended the War of 1812. The British successfully burned down Washington D.C. but then they ran out of supplies. Both sides suffered equally. The war can be described as a draw.
What happened at the Battle of New Orleans? It took place on January 8, 1815 and was the final battle of the War of 1812. Led by Major General Andrew Jackson, defeated an invading British intent on seizing New Orleans. The Treaty of Ghent had been signed on 1814, but news of the peace would not re
Who was Alexander Hamilton? He was the secretary of the treasury who created the charter for a National Bank. He was a federalist and later shot by the anti-federalist (democratic-republican) aaron burr.
Who was the hero at the Battle of New Orleans? Andrew Jackson
What was the Judiciary Act of 1789 do? This act, created by George Washington, established a 6 member Supremem Court and set up the federal district and circuit court system.
Which states opposed federal assumption of state debts (north or south)? Why? Look in your notes! (the questions from the Peterson book)
What are the differences between Federalists and Anti-Federalists? Look in your notes! I gave you handout :)
What were the terms of Pickney's Treaty? The Spanish gave the United States free Navigation of the Mississippi River.
In George Washington's farewell address, what did he warn against? he warned against entangling foreign alliances and partison domestic politics.
What was the XYZ affair? It occured during the Presidency of John Adams. The French officials, known as "x, y, and z" tried to demand a bribe in return for improving relations with the U.S.
What political party did Washington become associated with? Federalists.
What area was admitted under the Northwest Ordinance? Look it up! Know it on a map!
