Glorious Revolution When they kicked James out and bought in his daughter and her Dutch husband to the throne (William and Mary)
Mercantilism This states that as a nations trade grows its gold reserves increase, the nation then becomes more powerful
Navigation Acts Directed the trade between England and the colonies. Colonists could not use foreign ships to send goods of send goods outside the British empire.
Iroquois Confederation Largest group of natives in the east, remained independent by trading with both sides, grew an alliance with the British which threw off the balance of power.
Albany Plan of Union United colonial government...it failed because none of the coloniel assemblys approved it. They viewed themselves as individual colonies and fear uniting would forfeit their power
The Seven Years War After forming an alliance with Brussia, Brtiain declared war on France in 1756, Prussia fought the French in Europe while Britain fought in the Americas. The French began raiding colonies.
Napoleonic Warfare Old style of fighting...you stand in line and march toward the enemy.
Guerilla Warfare Hit and run..shooting randomly
Proclamation of 1763 To prevent former fighting, Britain declared that there would be no settling west of the Appalachian Mtns. This greatly angered the colonists
Writs of Assistance Legal document that allowed customs officers to enter any location to search for smuggled goods
Stamp Act Congress Drafted a petition to the king and parliament declaring that colonies should only be taxed by their own assemblies
Declaratory Act Stated that Parliament had the right to tax
Sons of Liberty Started by Samual Adams, its purpose was to protest the Stamp Act
Quartering Act The colonist were required to house British troops, and provide them with firewood, salt and drink
Navigation and Trade Acts regulation of trade between the colonies and British competitors, gave custom officials writs of assistance, which gave them the power to search ships, businesses and homes for smuggled goods.
Sugar Act This lowered tax on imported molasses, coffee silk and indigo. This also let officers seize goods from smugglers without going to court.
Stamp Act Placed a tax on all printed materials, all papers had to have a stamp
Townshend Acts A tax on imported goods such as glass, tea and paper
Tea Act of 1773 It allowed the East India Company to sell tea directly to shopkeeper and Merchants
Intolerable Acts ports to be shut down, colonists had to pay back price of tea, took away rights and town meetings, Forced to house Soldiers
George Washington Tried to lead expeditions into French Territory. Mission was to tell French to leave British land, failed epically, mission to build fort on Ohio River Valley, French already there so built a fort nearby.
Edward Braddock moved troops to slow, fought in dated Napoleonic warfare style
William Pitt Selected to lead British forces in America, after the death of Braddock. Told colonists not to worry about paying for war supplies. the British would pay for them
Jeffery Amherst and James Wolfe Sent by Pitt to command British Troops in America
King George III Lost Control of the colonies when news of the Boston Tea Party reached England.
Boston Massacre March 5, 1770 threw sticks and stones at the red coats, and called them names, also threw snowballs with ice shards inside, the british then fired into the crowd and killled 5 people
Boston Tea Party December 16, 1770 group of men disguised as MOHAWK indians threw 342 chests of tea into the harbor
What was the English Bill of rights and how did it impact America Document signed by William and Mary in 1689 guaranteeing certain basic rights to all citizens. 100's of year later this inspired the American Bill of rights.
How did England view the North American Colonies? They viewed the colonies as an economic source.
What was the cause(s) of the French and Indian War? Long standing rivilry between the world's 2 superpowers, both wanted to Ohio River Valley, Both began building forts and raiding towns.
Why did native Americans prefer the French over the British? The French didn't take their land, the French also married native women and would adopt native customs.
What were the conditions of the Treaty of Paris? Forced France to give up Canada and most of its lands east of the Mississippi River.
What advantages did the French have in the French and Indian War? Strong government, strategic forts, well-trained armies, support of many indian tribes,sparse population, widely scattered settlements, moderated sized navy.
What advantages did the British have in the French and Indian War? No central colonial government, predominance of coastal cities, regular army, support of Iriquois conferation, population was 15x the size of New France, region to defend compact on the Atlantic Coast, largest navy in the world.
Why was Britain frustrated with the colonists after the French and Indian War? The wouldn't pay back their war debt.
What did the colonist mean when they declared "no taxation without representation". Didn't believe that they had to pay taxes without having representation in the British Parliament.
Why did the Continental Congress meet and what decisions did they make? Colonial leaders met in Philadelphia to discuss their opposition to British Policy. -they repealed the 13 acts -voted to boycott british trade -decided to endorse suffolk reserves -decided to form malitias (groups of citzen soldiers)
