Why were steel plows needed on the Great Plains? The sod was packed so hard that other plows would break.
Why were windmills needed on the Great Plains? Windmills were needed because there were few rivers. Windmills could get water from far underground.
Why was Russian wheat seed needed? Other types of wheat seed couldn't stand the hot, dry summers and the cold winters.
What kind of weather did the pioneers face on the Great Plains? The hot, dry summers brought drought and storms. Winter snows led to spring floods.
